Help me build a £1000 Gaming PC please!

I originally posted this in the desktops section but I guess I was wrong to since this is the PC gaming section and it'll be more fitting here.

I know absolutely nothing about building and would rather let a specialist website build the PC for me. I have a max budget of £1000 but I'm willing to go £200-300 more if needs must.

I don't know what's better out of Intel and AMD from this link: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/custom-pc/

I don't know much about overclocking either, is it recommended? I'll be primarily gaming with some editing and streaming on the side.

Does a case = how quiet a PC will be? If so I want the quietest there is, lol. No RGB lights please.

I'll be mainly playing FPS games and will eventually get a 144hz monitor down the line.

Thank you for reading!

For gaming, usually Intel edges out AMD, but the difference isn't great. Intel has better single core speed, AMD is often more cost effective for multi core stuff. Gaming tends to get more benefit from single core speed)

Overclocking will boost your performance, at the expense of wearing out the system a little faster. The change in wear rate usually is very small (especially when done by PCS professionals, who only apply a small overclock anyway) and usually has no impact since you'll likely upgrade again before it becomes an issue. If you are streaming too then AMD might be the better bet, since you are asking your PC to do lots at once and the multi core approach becomes more important (though Intel CPUs have multiple cores too, of course!).

Yes, it has a big impact, but you can find it costs more. Fractal Define S is a very quiet case. Also, look for options in the build menu for super quiet fans.

The builds suggested here: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?60306-Can-I-have-some-advice-please

by Oussebon would be a great place to start - they fit your budget level. Do think about when you'll be getting the new screen though - not much point in building a system now for a screen you'll get in six months, there could be better options out by then. Plus, if you are not in a rush, there are new graphics cards out very soon with reviews due in a week's time. New processors are set to follow a few weeks after that (if rumors are true), so waiting a few weeks might give you better options.

A little over budget, if you wanted to trim it then maybe swap out the Noctua for a PCS frostflow 100 and skip the SSD. If you want it overclocked, pick the same spec but from here: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/computers/amd-am4-overclocked/

The above spec is sound, and - no pun intended - the components well chosen to minimise noise (e.g. the case and the CPU cooler). I'd suggest a few possible alterations:

I'll be mainly playing FPS games and will eventually get a 144hz monitor down the line.

In which case I'd suggest a build with an RX 580, since many ~£200 144hz monitors support freesync. The RX 580 offers overall almost exactly the same performance as the 1060 6gb (maybe a tad more?) and comes with a bundle of free games. It's ~£30 more expensive but for leveraging freesync on a monitor, possibly a bit more performance, and a set of games, that's a worthhile investment IMO.

The R5 2600x is a bad value proposition. I don't mean it's a bad CPU, but the pricing for it sucks.

An R7 2700x has 2 more cores / 4 more threads (very useful for streaming) and is only ~£45 more. But the R5 2600x is about £55 more than an R5 2600, and £90 more than the R5 1600. Since you're interested in streaming, I'd suggest going for the R7 (note, the R7 2700x is cheaper than the R7 2700, despite being faster...)

The R7 2700x also does a tiny smidge better in gaming:
ArxS7iaQoxa9h5B7cm9uND-650-80.png

I'd also suggest the B450 motherboard, which has 2 major advantages over the A320. 1) It enables overclocking. 2) It has 4 slots for the RAM rather than just 2. This means you might be able to add more RAM instead of having to replace that which you've already bought.

The Intel 760p also suffers from bad pricing. It's a fair bit slower than a good NVMe SSD like the WD Black or 970 Evo, but is only £13 cheaper than the WD Black. On the one hand, in real terms you might not notice the difference. But if making that argument, just stick with an even cheaper drive like the SX6000. I'd go with the WD Black.

The other way to play it is to drop the CPU to an R5 1600, which is still a capable gaming CPU and solid for streaming, but is about £90(!) less than the R5 2600x.

This frees up enough cash that even with the better SSD and motherboard and the RX 580 you could afford a 144hz monitor now, with freesync to pair up with the AMD GPU, and still be within your £1000-plus-upto-£300-more budget.

Hello, sorry for the incredibly late reply, work has been nothing but stressful but I can finally breathe after so long. But yeah, I want to go with this build but I'd like to know if anything new has been released that you'd see fit in making changes in the initial build you made for me. If nothing has been released then would you recommend me waiting? Thank you!

Intel CPUs have gotten more expensive thanks to inadequate supply
Intel released some new CPUs that aren't worth looking at for your uses
Nvidia released new high end GPUs that aren't worth considering for your budget.

One snag, which is that PC Specialist have stopped selling 2x4gb 3000MHz/2933MHz RAM for Ryzen systems.

So you may want to just get 16gb 2933MHz RAM at the upper end of your budget and at least you will be sorted for the lifetime of your system.

Also the 970 Evo's price is only £1 more than the WD Black .. and it also has a copy of AC:Odyssey...

As for what's around the corner immediately, AMD might release an RX 590, which people are expecting to be a dolled up RX 580. It could be more expensive, especially at first, though so I'd probably proceed with the RX 580 and the free games at the current price. i.e. the only thing on the horizon is a monitor refresh of a GPU, no big new waves of tech.

This build will do me just fine :) I'll definitely stick with the RX 580, there's no need for me to make an even higher leap. Thank you so very much. I'll update you when I make the purchase and it arrives!

Sounds good, let us know how it all goes :)

Got the money together! Checking out right now but before I fully can I'd like your help with these two popups if it's alright.

1. "You have selected a 550W power supply, but based on our calculations you actually only need a 450W power supply. We have calculated your specification to require around 400W of power including a 20% allowance. Although it is not a mandatory requirement to select a lower wattage power supply, doing so will save you money and the last thing we'd like to do is over charge you!"

The extra cost is fine with me but would having a 550w cause any problems in the future? Like burning out or something like that? Or is PCS just trying to save me money?

2. "We note that you have selected an M.2/PCI-E SSD drive and a mechanical hard drive under the primary hard disk drive option. Please confirm whether you would like your operating system (OS) to be installed on the SSD drive or on the mechanical hard drive:

M.2/PCI-E SSD
Mechanical Hard Drive

SSD of course? :)

PCS is trying to save you money. The main advantage of a 550W PSU over a 450W PSU is that you will have a freer hand when selecting future upgrades including future GPU upgrades.

There are no disadvantages worth speaking of.

And yes indeed, you want the OS on the SSD which I believe is the default option :)

PC arrived yesterday and after a day of messing about with it I have to say that I'm absolutely delighted with the build! It's near enough dead silent which shocked me, I'm really happy about that. I have no idea where the Assassins Creed Odyssey promotional code? (I'm assuming) is. Looked through all the papers but can't find anything. Other than that it's all been great, thank you!

Ask PCS. I'm not sure how they'd provide it, these things used to sometimes be on physical cards, but maybe PCS were meant to email it. Give them a call when they're open. When you ordered there were free games with the GPU (including AC Odyssey) and another free AC Odyssey with the SSD. Did you get any of them?

Great to hear the PC is behaving itself, and it as quiet as you'd hoped :)
