Power supply or GPU issue

Hi everyone, for starters here’s my rig

Intel I7 4790
Palit gtx 970
8gb ram
Corsair CS650M
ASUS z97-A

Lately some big issues have occurred on my PC, which is around 4 years old now. About a month ago whilst playing games the screen would suddenly go black, with the device disconnect sound appearing, audio from the game would continue but there was no sign I could continue interacting with the game. This would require a hard reset.

More recently, however, during a game the PC switched off and reset by itself, but no video would appear, nor any MOBO beep codes. Simply nothing would boot up, it wouldn’t even get to the bios. The monitor displayed a ‘check signal cable’ message despite being connected to my gpu. To identify what could be the culprit I removed each component I could individually, turning the pc on to see if boot up would happen and found that when the gpu is totally removed from the pc, and the monitor was instead connected to the MOBO, the pc would boot up and everything would run as normal, no issue whatsoever (apart from the lack of gpu).

So my question is whether this is a result of a PSU that is failing to meet the power demands of the gpu, either due to age or some other fault, or is it the result of a failed gpu, or is it both perhaps?

All responses are appreciated.

Is this a PC Specialist build?

Does it work when the card is plugged in with power but the monitor is connected to the motherboard?
If not, does it work when the card is plugged in but the power connection is disconnected and the monitor is connected to the motherboard?

Could be motherboard, GPU or PSU to be honest.

The system working off of the motherboard with everything plugged in would suggest PSU or GPU
The system working off of the motherboard with the GPU in but not connected to power would suggest the GPU
The system working off the motherboard with the GPU out would suggest the GPU or Motherboard

It's not an exact science but it would give you a guideline of the likeliest culprit.

Thank you for your response

From what IÂ’ve found the system does not work in any situation where the card is present in the pci e slot, even when itÂ’s not connected to the power and the monitor is connected to the motherboard. Everything spins and turns on normally, fans spin, but nothing boots.

When the gpu is entirely absent everything works as normal and windows boots.

That would suggest the card to me. Have you got another you could try in it? Any old PCIe GPU?
