Gaming laptop - is this spec any good?

Hi!

below is my spec for a gaming laptop. Laptop for lifestyle reasons.

I have a LAN, so 480GB HDD seems plenty to me.

Main purpose of laptop is to play games, so was hoping someone could tell me if this is a sensible spec without bottlenecks?

And as I keep my laptops for several years, is it worth spending the extra £200 to upgrade the GPU to GTX 1060, or will the performance gain not be that great?

Many thanks
TimTim

The performance gain going to the 1060 will be huge.

Unless you need the i7 and the RAM for non-gaming purposes you could drop the CPU to an i5 and the RAM to 1x8gb to help afford the better GPU.

I would avoid the UV500. The SX6000 from the M.2 SSD menu barely costs any more and ought to be a good deal faster. Or the WD Blue is a similar price to the UV500 and is just better.

Thanks Oussebon. I will take your advice on the hard drive and GPU :)

I am wondering if it worth the extra £31 to go with the i7 CPU. And the extra £78 to go to 16GB of RAM? Or do you think the performance gains from either will be marginal? Any idea if it's possible to upgrade the RAM in these laptops?

Many thanks

The performance going 8-16gb RAM will generally be marginal for gaming and casual office type uses. The RAM can be upgraded in the laptop - you can add an extra stick yourself later on. But if you want to spend the extra now to save the effort later on, it's not the worst idea.

The i7 was about ~£70(?) more on the 1050 ti build. If it's only £31 more on the 1060 build it could be worth it. Some titles will benefit. I suppose that's only ~3% of the total system's price which isn't too bad for a couple extra cores.

THanks Oussebon. One last thing I was wondering -The Vyper Series chassis only seems to have an HDMI port, and no display ports. Will this limit the potential display performance of the laptop I've specced when conected to a monitor? I.e limit it to only 60FPS? I've been reading up on this and not 100% sure I've understood correctly!

I believe HDMI 1.4 can support high refresh rate (120hz) but not all high refresh rate monitors will accept over 60hz over HDMI so you need to make sure the monitor supports it too. I'd suggest calling PCS to discuss though.

It's worth bearing in mind that even a GTX 1060 won't play demanding modern titles much above 60fps anyway, so not all games would benefit much from a high refresh rate monitor anyhow
