Wired Connection Disconnecting and Connecting

So I've been having this issue for a while now, its very random but mainly has been happening whilst watching netflix / twitch streams plus also some PC games like Fortnite / Rust / Counterstrike.

Basically what happens is my wired connection will just drop randomly completely disconnecting me from the internet, then about a few seconds later, it will reconnect and then about another few seconds after that it will repeat again and again for usually only 30 - 60 seconds. I've tried so many things, even wiping my whole PC, going into network settings etc and fiddling around, googling the issue and trying to follow someone else's steps but it never ever seems to work. Can someone please attempt to help my issue! I've been free of this for a couple months but its come back randomly and is doing it frequently again! I can barely use my PC for what I intent to (Gaming).

Thanks

Hi,

Has your connection with the broadband provider been checked and have they performed checks on their equipment at your end? Are you using a router provided by them or one you've purchased? If it is the router dropping out there might be logs you can review which would tell you what happened.

At the times it has dropped has there been an opportunity to see if another internet connected device is still up? If it drops for as much as 30-60 seconds I would expect that to be long enough to check another device (your phone maybe) to see if it is just your PC or more than that. The router might be at fault and drop one or all of the wired connections, or those and the wifi connections too. Something to investigate.

With it being an intermittent problem, cabling and faulty or damaged network sockets are strong contenders as the reason.

Whilst it could be a software issue I would be fault-finding hardware first. In my view that's much more likely to be the cause.

With this part of what you said, I live with parents and a sister, everything else stays connected. Smart TV's, phones, laptops etc. So I know it's definitly not the provider. As for the router, I had this issue a while back and I believe we've actually upgraded our router (was given it new from the same provider) and the problem still occurs.

Which lead me to believe it was either software or hardware issues causing the problem. The long cable I'm using was new, although it goes through my wall and is hard to actually check or replace if its broken. The motherboard I use is a ROG Maximus IX Hero board. I opened my PC to check if it was a network card fault after seeing a forum post a while back, but the board seems to have like metal casing around certain parts and I could't actually find where it would be! I've also tried many software fixes such as power saver options and fiddling with device mangers with the network devices but none of that seemed to work. I was tempted to bring my PC into a shop somewhere for someone to have a look as I'm not the best when it comes to PC issues, however I did build my own PC so I have a small amount of knowledge! Thanks for the reply!

This PC with the ROG Maximus IX Hero - is that one you built yourself or is it a PC specialist system?

If it's a PCS system, you could phone them for tech support

It's not possible for users here to advise extensively on non-PCS systems - but if it isn't a PCS system, rather than taking it to a shop I would suggest trying the Asus forums and possibly further to that Asus tech support. The motherboard will still be under warranty with Asus.

If it's a PCS system and it's out of warranty, contact them anyway as the tech support is lifetime afaik, and you or they on your behalf may be able to claim on the warranty with Asus.

If it's a wired connection, what happens if you switch to a different port on the router?

You said you were free of it for a couple of months. What happened for you to be free of it for 2 months? And what changed recently? A windows update perhaps?

The long cable I'm using was new, although it goes through my wall and is hard to actually check or replace if its broken
Potentially get a very long cable, or move the PC closer to the router, and try with another cable.

No this is a PC I built myself. Not gonna lie, I thought this was just a forum where I could get a little insight on my issue :/ But to answer your two points I've tried changing router ports. I changed the router too so I know thats definiltey not the issue. Also, I wiped my PC not that long ago so maybe that was how I was free of the issue. I'm not sure exaclty when I stopped recieving this issue compared to when I actually wiped my PC clean so I could be wrong...

Not a problem, many people arrive here with that view :) But as the forums belong to PCS who build and sell custom PCs and laptops, users aren't able to offer sales and support advice for other companies' systems, understandably I suppose.

I'd try a different cable to rule that out as above.

I'd then take it to Asus since it should be under warranty. They have community forums much like these and perhaps people there can advise, as well as official tech support channels through which an RMA could be raised if required.

I wouldn't take it to a shop and pay for something that I'd already paid Asus for i.e. the warranty

Okay! I'll try changing the cable to rule it out as a possibility. But thanks for all your help anyway. I guess if that doesn't fix it then I'll look into the Asus forum pages and possibly look further with a replacement board through the warranty! Thanks a bunch. Honestly really helpful!
