A few Vyper questions

Hi

I'm looking at the vyper 15 chassis, I have read reviews online at vortex that whole chassis is made out of plastic, my question is how strong is this plastic? especially around the screen and top and second question is the fan noise loud on this chassis? and third & final question does the vyper 15 laptop and have status leds?

I'm not really too keen for the whole chassis to be plastic, it kinda put you off as l want a laptop to last a good 5 years, the recoil 2 is plastic with brushed aluminium lid that is ok only concern their is their fans make loud noise as I've read on the forums here and keyboard keys look cheap plastic as I've seen on a review on YouTube where the guy keeps moving the keys about with his fingers in the review.

The vyper is at a good price but plastic puts me off, the like of a MSI with a GTX 1060, 16gb will cost nearly £1400 to £1500 pounds, with the vyper customer is saving money.

What is your advice to me folk?

A Recoil with all that would still be lower than £1400 / cheaper than a number of alternatives.

There are a couple of threads here:

https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/foru...y-coming-from-subwoofer/page2&highlight=vyper
One where the guy has just posted photos, so we can presume they're 100% happy? The other thread where the only complaint seems to be the weaker speakers.

I think all laptops I've owned have been plastic rather than metal. The Optimus we have from 2012 is still alive and well (and plastic).

You could always ask in that thread about the speakers to see if any vyper owners come back to you.

Ok, thanks for your reply, can you tell me if the vyper or recoil 2 have status leds on the chassis and how stable is the control centre software?, regarding the loud fan noise l presume you don't have any answer for that?

If l go ahead with this, l might ask PCS to put Coolmaster thermal paste instead of standard, a few issues l'm concerned about is the loud fan noise and l want to know how stable is the Gaming control centre software.

I don't own one I'm afraid, so no idea.

What do you mean by status LEDs? The very small LEDs you get on many laptops like power on, HDD usage, battery full/charging? It has some of those indicators just above the keyboard by the hinge. You can call PCS tomorrow if you need a detailed rundown on what's where I guess :)

They don't sell the vyper with the better cooling paste. According to this thread:

"You are correct that the cooling options on other laptops do offer additional thermal paste options. We do find however that the thermal operation on both the Vyper and Recoil chassis are well within limitation and guidelines to maintain performance on those high end components.

It does so occur however that the Vyper chassis requires extensive labour for a repaste to be possible. Should you wish to have aftermarket thermal paste be used on this chassis there is paste and labour cost of an additional £20 or 30eu.

I would however put my strong faith in the OEM paste which is used by the chassis manufacturer on this chassis. In our tests is performs very well when compared against our range and even compared against repasted other models with the same spec. The cooling system on this chassis is quite robust."

What will you be using the system for? gaming? anything else?

Mainly mid range gaming, modding and some 3d modelling, can you give me any info on how stable is the gaming control centre software??

About the thermal issue pcs got back to me and said it's extra £9 to have the coolmaster thermal paste

About the status leds on the chassis I've sent a separate email to pcs still waiting to hear back yet.

Also still waiting to hear from other users who have a low sound issue on the vyper and what chip does it use for the sound?

No because I don't own one, I don't work for PCS, and I can't immediately see anything about it on google :)

I do suggest phoning them.

It's very odd they should say that. I think whoever said that might have got it wrong. Normall it's an extra £9 but it is not an option on the Vyper configurator, and they went at some length to tell the other user as to why it was a) unnecessary and b) not worth their time offering it as an option. If it really is available for £9, why isn't it in the configurator, and why did they say what they said before?

Also still waiting to hear from other users who have a low sound issue on the vyper and what chip does it use for the sound?[/QUOTE] No idea. The low sound issue seemed to be due to the positioning of the speakers rather than the sound chip.

These really are all quite detailed questions on a chassis that, as you can see, has had relatively little discussion on the forums.

I really do suggest phoning PCS to discuss. If you get answers, please do let us know.

Also remember that the Vyper is a budget chassis. It will inevitably trade in some features to maintain a lower price than things like the Recoil and Optimus.

That M.2 SSD is small and very slow by SSD standards. I really would suggest a 256gb one from a better series like the Intel 760p or WD Blacks.

I'd also suggest buying the RAM as 2x8gb as from the uses you describe it appears highly unlikely you'll need to add more, so all 1x16gb does is cost you dual channel RAM.

Got a reply back from pcs, the vyper does have status leds

The thermal option is not on the confrigrator because on the vyper the fan embedded on the CPU but they can still put the cooler master thermal with an extra cost, it is time consuming for them to do so.

Regarding the sound, very rarely the vyper has an issue with sound, this is the reply from pcs and also they sent me the sound specification for the vyper:

Speaker/MIC

Build-in 2 speakers

Speaker : 2W/each

2W subwoofer (option)

Digital Microphone support w/ Camera

The quality is normal for this level of laptop with it being a mid-range product.

Well l asked them the name of the sound chip, no reply on that, but it says realtek on their website on the detail specification for the vyper.

The changes l will make l will change to 256 GB Intel m2 ssd and 2x8gb ddr4 memory, I'm still thinking if l should change the chassis from vyper to recoil 2 chassis, l heard the recoil 2 laptop the fan gets loud under heavy tasks like gaming etc.

Should l go for the Vyper laptop I'm not really too fussed about the sound on the vyper that's normal for laptops at that range.
