VR Gaming Laptop

So, I got a new gaming laptop for Christmas last year.

I have always been a gamer girl and I always will be.

Since my previous laptop was 2009, this new one offered beautiful graphics, able to play mostly any game and such a smooth experience.

However, I found my way into the realms of VRChat. I wanted to experience VR and not just for the gaming.

I researched, ran compatibility tests which my laptop passed and finally purchased my Oculus Rift.

Myself and my two friends spent a total of 18 hours trying to fix whatever the problem was.

As a last resort, one friend found someone on YouTube who had my exact laptop and problem. They’d fixed it with a link box.

On I go to Amazon to spend £100 with all hopes it would fix it.

Waiting for the two delieveries for a few days, finally it arrived.

I connected it all up. Nope. Tried new cables. Nope.

I came to the conclusion that it was the laptop.

So, long story short, one of my friends (thanks babe) has spec’d this laptop for me so I can FINALLY enjoy my Oculus Rift.

I just ordered it yesterday and I am excited!

I would suggest cancelling the order.

You're spending a huge sum on an SSD, which would be better spent on a more powerful graphics card. You can replace/add/upgrade storage, but you can't the graphics card and so I usually suggest it makes sense to get the most powerful GPU you can. Especially for demanding VR gaming.

PCS have a Defiance spec here with a GTX 1070 for £1349: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/computers-for-next-day-delivery/802/

Or the Proteus with a 500gb SSD and 1TB HDD plus the GTX 1070 for £1350:

The point is you can get a much more powerful graphics card if you avoid buying a 1TB SSD. It's very easy to move games between drives too.

Thanks for the advice but we decided the 1060 is fine though aware of the 70. ^_^

I've just bought a laptop almost identical to the spec suggested by Oussebon. It arrived last week and past all the SteamVR tests I threw at it, though I've not had chance to link it to an actual headset yet.

HTC tests say it should run a Vive Pro, which is my aim for it. I'll be testing it more soon, it has just had to go back as it arrived with the wrong keyboard on it (A problem with PCS's system it seems, that wasn't corrected when I emailed them). It's a nice looking, good quality computer.

I would add the Oussebon is probably the most knowledgeable and experienced hardware expert on here, he really does know what he's talking about. :)

I’m not questioning his expertise and I’m of course very thankful for any advice, but my current laptop passed all of the tests for VR too, including Oculus’ own and SteamVR.

Thank you all, I’ll stick to my spec and see how it goes. I’m not a full time gamer or a streamer and I’m sure the spec will wok fine.

I’ve had enough messing around I just want to be able to use the Rift :)

Without meaning to sound like a spoilt brat, I didn’t come here for advice but I was just excited. Thank you though :)

I don't work for PCS so my only interest is in seeing people get the best value for their £ and not cheat themselves out of performance or money. So I'm afraid I will offer advice even when not asked for as I consider any PCS spec on the forums fair game ;)

But it's your money and your purchase ofc!

If you are proceeding with the Optimus, would you mind posting a review / your impressions of it once you're received it and have had the chance to try it out? Things like how it performs for what you use it for, CPU and GPU temperatures, pros/cons?

I ask because not many people have done so and other users may find it helpful when weighing up what to buy. :)

Of course, that is the other reason why I posted this thread. :)

Yes but I’m spending my days reading what people do in VR and complaints about really long waiting times, so it’s very good feedback for hardly any waiting! :D
