I'm not convinced by this at all. I mean, most of the spec and choices are sound, but when you add it all up it's £1900 for a spec that's ultimately powered by an RX 580 for 1080p gaming... whereas for that kind of money you could start thinking about 1440p high refresh or even 4k.

You're spending huge amounts on the motherboard and the cooler. If you drop those down a touch, it saves enough to buy you an RX Vega 56 if you drop the RX580 and buy the GPU from elsewhere.

I don't think I'd buy an AMD system pre-overclocked as frankly I have no idea how PCS manage the overclock. If they do an all-core overclock, performance might actually be better just letting XFR and Precision Boost 2 do their things. Given that PCS say "upto 4.1GHz", which is lower than the CPU's own boost, it sounds a lot like an all-core OC which may not be to your advantage.

Plus a Vega 56 for £390. Google shopping being your friend here.

Vega 56 will be a lot more suited to high refresh 1080p gaming, especially with more demanding modern titles.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm guessing AMD technology using XFR and Precision Boost kind of substitutes for overclocking? Is this an automated task or manual task?

I was under the impression that Water cooling was more efficient and a lot more effective in keeping the CPU cooler? If I was to use the Vega 56 would it beneficial to use the NOCTUA NH-U14S FAN CPU COOLER or will the CoolerMaster Hyper 212X (120mm) Fan CPU Cooler do the trick?

Automatic, think Intel Turbo Boost.

The H100x is a more effective cooler but unless you're overclocking you don't need it. A bit like an elephant is heavier than a hammer, but either will squash a bug just fine :) Even the stock AMD coolers are fine (for cooling, and bug squashing..). The CM212x is better than the stock cooler and unless you really want to do manual overclocking the Noctua or a high end AIO cooler like the 100x are not necessary.

If it's a choice between a system with an R7 2700x + H100x + RX 580 and an R7 2700x + CM212x + Vega 56, the system with the Vega 56 will give vastly better performance.

If you want to get an H100x to dabble in overclocking, by all means, but don't get an H100x if it means you can only afford an RX 580 level GPU for a nearly £2000 gaming PC.

The Vega GPU won't really care which CPU cooler you have.

Thanks for the detailed response. Is AMD/vega 56 the right move for a gaming PC? The reason i went down this route was due to have a limit of £2000 max and this includes the monitor aswell for freesync. The g-sync monitors are so expensive.

If I raised my budget to £2000 could I improve on this spec?

I was just want to make sure i get the right rig for the money.

Vega is a very good move for a gaming PC, I only suggest buying elsewhere as PCS's Vegas are expensive and would take you over budget. An AMD R7 2700x is a fair choice for gaming.

If you want to take the budget up a bit then you can always stick with the H100x cooler if you like it, and get a Vega 56/64 card from elsewhere. I think the X470 Ultra Gaming mobo is fine. Most of the spec you drew up is great in my opinion, I just feel the GPU is lacking for a ~£2000 build. Hence my suggestions.:)

+ a Vega GPU. PCS's Vega GPUs are almost £600 but you can find them a lot cheaper elsewhere, which will let you stay comfortably in budget.

The reason why I decided to go with PCS was due to the monthly repayment option. I am willing to have a monthly cost of <£60 so I'm trying to consolidate everything under one purchase instead of any upfront costs elsewhere. I've noticed that the Vega 56 and 64 are the same price, I'm guessing the Vega 64 GPU is the better GPU than the 54 version? Also is it worth purcahsing the 850 RMx PSU over the 650 TXm PSU?

This is what I've got so far:

A little bit over budget for overall cost but within the £60 allocation a month I've given myself. Let me know your thoughts.

PC Specialist's Vega prices are ludicrously high. So high it's not even funny. To the point that you would almost certainly be able to buy a cheaper system elsewhere.

So do carefully consider your options here. Or perhaps you can get a Vega GPU on finance elsewhere.

Vega 64 is more powerful than Vega 56, yes.

The RMx PSU is better than the TXm PSU, in that it's modular and even better quality, but the TXm PSU is more than fine.

If you are spending £2100 on a PC then 1080p is aiming low. 1440p 144hz is easily achievable, especially if you can source a Vega GPU from elsewhere for under £400. You can buy a reasonable 4k gaming PC for £2k. Including the gsync monitor.

If you're looking for a Vega 64, [other company] (am I allowed to say this given they're another company? Will delete if this is against forum rules) sell the Sapphire Nitro Vega 64 for £500 and they have finance options. I'm not sure what brand PCS use but the Sapphire seems to be the best performing Vega 64 and has a very good cooler (important, given Vegas apparently run hot).

Comparison video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYQsFnVDbpw

Most places will do finance tbh. You can get some Vega 64s from £450.

I'm sure general guidance on exploring other options is fine, but best to stay clear of specific referrals to competitors :) Besides, google is easy enough to use!

Thanks guys, I've queried the vega 64 model with PCS and got told they'll get back to me tomorrow.

I've also took your advice about the monitor for 1080p and probs will look at the 1440p AOC free sync monitor instead available via PCS it adds a bit to the budget but it's better than getting a £200 monitor and replacing at a later stage...

All in all do we feel this is a decent build for gaming? Thanks!

I have spoken with PCS and the vega 64 version is the rog strix version. I'm guessing this slight poorer performance than the Sapphire version?

Oussebon

The Rog Strix is fine. In fact it's quite decent.

What you want to avoid are the Vega cards with the stock air coolers, but any decent AIB cooler like the Strix is fine:

I would suggest you google the Vega 64 Strix and see whether you really are happy paying PCS's price for it though :)

It looks great.

I might just be tempted to get the 750W PSU. I'm 99% sure a 650W PSU will be fine even for a Vega 64, but I've seen some reviews report very high peak power draws (~325W) and the rest of the system if under heavy load too could draw a couple hundred watts or more. For £5 difference the 750W PSU is probably worth it for a bit more headroom.

Plus power supplies are often most efficient in the mid-range of their load % so you might notionally claw back a few pence on the energy bills :)

But yes, other than recommending the 750W PSU out of paranoia for £5, wouldn't change a thing.

Just want to say thanks for the help in selecting the correct components for the PC :) I took your advice and went for the higher PSU, currently 2 working days into my order now :D

One other question, I have a spare 1080p 60hz Samsung Monitor which I wish to use alongside my free sync monitor. How would I connect this up?

I'm guessing I'll connect the GPU HDMI port into the AOG monitor and then VGA cable from the GPU to the second Samsung monitor?

Oussebon

Multiverse Poster
HDMI or DP for the AOC Agon

The GPU is unlikely to have VGA. I assume your monitor doesn't just have VGA input? Probably has DVI or HDMI itself?

At worst you'll end up having to buy a display adapter cable.

Keep us posted with how things go, and how the system is once you've received it and had a chance to try it out.

pat123

Member
I've read that I will need to use the display port for 1440p 144hz refresh rate?

So I guess I'll use the HDMI port to connect into my Samsung monitor to the GPU.

Sure will thanks again :)

Oussebon

Multiverse Poster
I believe it's HDMI 2.0 for both the monitor and GPU so should work via that, but yeah, DP for the freesync monitor since you need HDMI for the other anyway :)
