Advice on a high end Ryzen 7 build

Hi,

I'm looking at a build for my son which will predominantly be a gaming PC but with expansion potential to a multiple monitor/VR config and capable of streaming and video editing. Hopefully it won't need major component upgrades for 2-3 years. Personally I'm prone to over speccing and did start out with a Threadripper 2950X based build but this one is around £700 cheaper although still not insignificant.

I did look at the Rog Crosshair VII board but that has a hefty price premium and I couldn't see the big differences.
Any suggestions particularly on the memory spec and cooling config would be appreciated.

Dave

What monitor are you pairing this with?

At the moment we have a couple of options. He has an old (DVI-I) Dell 2407WFP (1920x1200, 60 Hz) and we have a Fujitsu B34-9 UE (3440x1440). In reality I'll probably get him a 4K monitor as the primary one and use the Dell 2407 as a second screen.
As for other bits and pieces such as peripherals, he can bankroll those ;)

The RTX 2080 is wasted on a 1080p monitor. So use that Fujitsu or a 4k screen - and if you buy a 4k screen, make sure it has gsync. These are expensive (~£500-800) so you may wish to trim some fat off the build.

In fact, you might as well stick with a 1080 ti. The RTX 2080 performs basically the same as the 1080 ti, but sells itself via "RTX" features. Which currently 0 games support. There was a gameplay demo of Shadow of the Tomb Raider with raytracing features enabled. The 2080 ti was failing to maintain 60fps... at 1080p... So £125 extra for features which currently apply to 0 games and even when they do apply to games may not actually offer playable performance anyway is... shall we be kind to Nvidia and call it a gamble?

32gb RAM is a waste for gaming, and not helpful for streaming. It might help with video editing, if you did it for a living. Given the intended uses and the price of RAM, drop to 16gb.

The PRO HDDs are super expensive and not worth the price premium.

Threadripper CPUs aren't meant for gaming. In fact they often perform worse unless / even if you turn off half of the cores.

If your son was intending to game and stream to both youtube and twitch simultaneously there might be a case for it. Not many people do that though...

I'd probably stick with the 1 year warranty as many of the parts carry their own warranties with the manufacturers anyway.

or £2238 with the 1080 ti, but it didn't let me post that as the 1080 ti is out of stock until tomorrow (lol?)

Which is £450 towards a 4k gsync monitor. Or 1440p 144hz. Or 1440p ultrawide if you're into that kind of thing.

Thanks for the pointers. Good call on the graphics card as there is a significant price premium. Memory wise I occasionally run up a bunch of VM's so that was my uplift rather than his use case. I'll go back to researching the 1080TI and have a look at the build you specced.
