Hard drive / Optane memory query.

I'm undecided as to whether I should opt for a 1TB hard drive with a 128 Or 256 Ssd
Or go for a single hard drive and add some Optane memory in the 2nd slot.

Laptop will primarily be used for gaming.

Cheers,
Rich

256gb NVMe SSD + 1TB HDD. Not even a choice. The SSD will be miles faster than the Optane memory, and you can rotate your favourite games between SSD/HDD as you move between titles.

What spec are you considering, with what budget>

Looking at around the £1000 Mark but could go a bit higher as it may add some longevity.
Can't really work out the difference between the different basic builds though if you could advise?
I'm looking the i7, 16 gig ram (single so spare slot to upgrade) and the GTX 1060
Appreciate any advise you have though.

If storage speed is what you're after then an M.2 NVMe SSD for Windows and programs and a largish 7200rpm HDD for data is absolutely the way to go.

TBH, with SSD prices coming down I'm at a loss to understand why Intel developed Optane.....

I have to agree, even without prices dropping, the Intel modules are so expensive for the cache sizes, there's never really been an upside to it. It's a stopgap filler, much like PCI-e SSD's.

I've managed to spec everything I like into the
15.6" OPTIMUS IX or the 15.6" RECOIL II
Is there much difference between all the basic models?
Sorry it's hard to compare in detail as using my phone.

The recoil is lighter by half a kilo or so I think. The Recoil has a 60hz screen as standard while the Optimus has a 144hz screen as standard.

If you're going for a Recoil with an i7 8750H, GTX 1060, 16gb RAM, 500gb SSD + 1TB HDD, check out this fixed review spec:
https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/configure-review/264/
The SSD is the 970 Pro, which also comes with free games.

I read the reviews for the recoil and they are definately very positive.
It definately competes with a couple of the other big brands I've been looking at for similar specs and cost.
(Though the recoil gives a lot more SSD space compared to it's equivalents)
Thanks loads for the help!!!
