Hi there,

I need a new workstation for video rendering (Blender) and for photogrammetry (Agisoft Photoscan).

Budget is about 8k EUR.

Do you think this setup makes any sense?

Why RAID 1? Is it just to minimise downtime in the event of one hard disk failing? If it's just for general backup, then a versioned backup system to network storage may be preferable.

There is a limit to how much agisoft benefits from multiple GPUs:
https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Agisoft-PhotoScan-1-4-1---Multi-GPU-Scaling-1147/
There's some benefit, but be aware of the limits to that. I'm not sure how well it scales in blender GPU rendering.

You may want to consider an AMD 32-core Threadripper CPU which can be got for the same price and could offer much faster performance in Blender. See this, which includes benches of both Blender and Agisoft on those CPUs.
https://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/2128?vs=2133

Though unfortunately PCS don't seem to sell it with 128gb RAM:
https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/computers/amd-x399-pc/

I'd suggest getting a 970 Evo or maybe Pro from the M.2 SSD Drive Menu instead of the 860 Evo.

The spec seems sound in general.

Be aware Intel is going to release refreshed CPUs (Basin Falls) with higher clock speeds: https://www.anandtech.com/show/13402/intel-basin-falls-refresh-core-i9-9980xe

Thank you for your valuable input!

You are right about RAID1, maybe I skip RAID at all, as we will have a cloud backup soon.

I am very well aware of the (limited) bene´fits of multiple GPU for Agisoft, but we need to process data very fast. Blender is supporting multiple GPU as well and behaves quite similar to Agisoft in this point.

Indeed I considered a 32 core Threadripper, but it is slower with Agisoft. I hope the 2 GPU will speed up Blender, CPU is not really used when rendering on GPU I think. I did not know about the new Intel CPU, the higher clock speed seems to be very good for Agisoft.

M.2 SSD might make sense, I did not think about this before, thank you dor that!

one more question about RAM: Is it worth to invest in higher clocked RAM? And is the choosen GPU or the new Intel CPU supporting more than 2666 Mhz at all? According to the specs thats the maximum.

It looks like Agisoft can benefit quite a bit from faster RAM:
https://www.anandtech.com/show/10602/memory-frequency-scaling-on-skull-canyon/5
So the 300MHz RAM seems worth it.

The CPUs and motherboards do support RAM higher than 2666MHz - 2666MHz is just the base frequency. XMP allows for the RAM to run faster than this.

If speed is of the absolute assence, consider a pre-overclocked system here:
https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/computers/intel-x299-overclocked/
The price is not much more than a non-overclocked system, and if you buy pre-overclocked the system and the overclock are covered under PC Specialist's warranty. I believe overclocked systems go through additional testing before shipping to ensure stability.
