My New Octane V Laptop!

I recently received my new Octane V laptop from PCSpecialist and I couldn't be happier! Below is the spec:

Chassis & Display Octane Series: 15.6" Matte Full HD 144Hz 72% NTSC LED Widescreen (1920x1080) + G-Sync
Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™ i5 Six Core Processor i5-9600K (3.7 GHz) 9 MB Cache
Memory (RAM) 8GB Corsair 2400MHz SODIMM DDR4 (1 x 8GB)
Graphics Card NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1070 OC 1518 MHz - 8.0GB GDDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 12.1
1st Hard Disk 500GB Samsung 860 2.5" EVO SSD, SATA 6Gb/s (upto 550MB/sR | 520MB/sW)

I bought it as a desktop replacement and decided to bite the bullet and get one of the brand new 9th gen i5 9600K. I'm very glad i did. It runs everything i throw at it in Ultra, I've tried Battlefiled 1, Overwatch so far and the 144hz screen makes them look absolutely stunning! The only drawback I have noticed is that the system fans need to run at a very high rpm to keep temps down, but then, the laptop is running an overclocked desktop processor and an overclocked 1070. The performance I'm getting makes me forgive the loud fans as i'm wearing a headset most of the time anyway, although it may get on my other halves nerves after a while.

The laptop chassis is very pretty and I absolutely love the RGB keyboard, i went for a 15 inch laptop so that it was a bit more portable and easier to transport than a 17 inch one. I bought another 500gb 860 SSD separately as there were a few deals around, I'm also ordering another 8gb RAM in the black Friday sales to give it another little boost!

Overall I'm extremely happy with my new laptop and as this is the second laptop I've had built from PCSpecialist, I would 100% recommend them to anyone wanting a new rig. I especially recommend getting a custom build rather than a branded one as you get much better spec for less!

Hope this review helps anyone who's undecided.

Paul

I was VERY tempted by one of these! But in the end decided it was a little over budget and less portable.

What temps are you getting if you don't mind me asking? Also how big is the power pack(s)?
May be looking to get another system in a few months which doesn't need to be as portable.

Hi

I am also planning to get a similar laptop, but have not yet decided about the exact config. Is the laptop overclockable either through an unlocked BIOS or through some other software manager and how well does this work?

Hi Raj
The i5-9600K is indeed overclockable, but we do not offer this service. Please be advised, that overclocking it yourself voids the warranty, as you will most likely run into overheating issues which could cause damage to the other parts, too.

It’s not AT ALL advised to overclock a laptop unless they come factory done so. The cooling isn’t designed for overclocking and you WILL damage either the processor, motherboard or both.

I was only planning to over clock a 9700k to 9900k stock values. Would that be possible considering that 9900k is available as a config?

Overclocking the 9700k won't magically add hyperthreading either, which is one of the main differences with the 9900k.

Hi Thornyp

now that you have had your laptop for a few months, could you comment on how well it handles the heat? Are there any issues with overheating or thermal throttling? I have been tempted to buy the Octane V with 9700k and Nvidia 1070 but am having second thoughts as a lot of people have warned me against it

regards

Raj
