Desktop To Deal With Mega Spreedsheets

Hi all!

I'm after a desktop that can deal with massive excel documents, talking 500K rows and counting.

Please could I get some advice as to what sort of setup would best suit dealing with huge data sets?

Thanks in advance!!

Others will have more detailed and informed suggestions, but I would be looking at as much RAM as you can afford and the fastest SSD you can afford to hold the Excel documents.

Wrong use case. I have this argument all the time. Excel sheets become unmanageable at that kind of size.

Anyhoo... What Ubuysa said

Thanks for the replies so far.

Looking for around £1500ish, the cheaper the better of course.

I was thinking as much RAM as possible and a quality processor.. graphics card and a SSD drive were unncessary?

Thanks!

With Excel sheets that large you'll want them loaded as fast as possible, hence an SSD.

Thanks for information, I had no idea 32-bit Excel was limited to 2GB RAM.

Will be upgrading to 64-bit on my current PC immediately, I have however also got a Mac which is running 64-bit and it doesnt have struggle just trying to open the spreadsheets.

So the consensus is, stacks of RAM, SSD and a solid processor? Oh and 64-bit Excel!

Thanks guys.

Definitely - the SSD will help loading times immensely (there's a good chance your Mac has an SSD if it's less than about 7 years old).

Plenty of RAM though honestly I don't know how much becomes too much and is wasted when talking about Excel as personally I'm far from a power-user of it.

And yeah try 64-bit Excel. As I said before, just be careful if your sheets use macros or custom plugins for compatibility- it's one of the main reasons 64-bit isn't always rolled out.

MOAR RAM can be tempting and is a possibility but it's worth checking very carefully whether it's worth it.
