i have bought a new laptop but when it is on i can not get on the interent on my home pc without turning off my laptop?

Make sure that the both the laptop and your PC and laptop (and every other device you use) are configured to 'obtain an IP address automatically'. Do not manually assign any IP addresses.

thanks for that but i am a bit of a computer nerd my pc is 12 years old and is windows xp. how do set the ip address on automatic

Try this: https://www.linksys.com/us/support-article?articleNum=142984#b. You'll need to make sure that ALL devices are obtaining an IP address automatically, so check that NONE are using a static (hard coded) IP address.

BTW. It's unwise in the extreme to be connecting a Windows XP machine to the Internet, there are no more security patches available and so you should assume that this PC is already compromised. That means it's entirely possible that all your other devices have been compromised through that insecure XP machine....
