Any uses other than gaming?

What's the budget and what did that system cost?

My main observations would be:
switch the RAM to 16gb (32gb is pointless for gaming, and not needed to be futureproof)
drop the i9 to the 9700k (there's about 1% performance difference between them if that)
switch the 'Pro' HDD for a regular one
switch the GPU to the regular 2080 ti and save £250

Which actually saves you £550. This being almost enough to buy a 4k 32" IPS gsync monitor as well as your 1440p 144hz. Or go on holiday for a week. Or something of that order. :)

Gaming only, cost would have been £4195, with the changes you suggested £3788.
excellent changes will definately do the cpu, gpu, ram and hdd, the only change i probably will not make is switching to 4k because of all the time i have spent reading and watching tech reviews online about 4k, 2k and 1080p gaming. There seems to be problems with upscaleing in windows and there is a max of 120hz with the displayport 1.4, so the top 4k monitors get around this by the user doing a manual overclock at the expense of colour drop etc. After watching reviewers playing games in 4k which does look absolutely awesome and jaw dropping, but weighing everything up 2k gaming which also looks absolutely amazing at higher refresh rates of 165hz seems to be the best option for 2018. It looks like it is going to take a year or two for 4k to be standardised.
Do you do 4k gaming and if so what is your opinion on the 4k 144hz (120hz) vs 2k 165hz debate.

thank you for the advice on these savings.

In fairness the 4k monitors with 120hz are £1500-£2000 and I wasn't advocating one of those.

I don't think there is much of debate between 4k 120hz and 1440p 144/165hz because the monitors are in such different price classes. The usual debate is 1440p 144/165hz vs 4k 60hz since monitors, especially with gsync, are in similar price ranges. Most of the arguments against 4k 120hz I've heard are price, the monitors not being quite as good as they ought to be for the price, and the horsepower needed to push that res+framerate anyway.

My stance on the 4k60hz vs 1440/144hz debate is that I don't really have one. :) Personally I'd prefer 4k 60hz as I gather it can really add to the immersion of the kinds of games I play, and indeed my favourite title goes wibbly if you run it over 60fps anyway (Skyrim LE). But I totally see the arguments for 1440p high refresh (easier to maintain acceptable fps, higher refresh giving smoother gaming/pc experience, etc).

I wasn't saying you must buy a 4k monitor, only that with £550 savings you could get one as well as the AOC Agon if you wanted!

It is very tempting to go for a 4k monitor, and i think you are spot on when i watched the reviews it very much depended on what type of games you like to play as to choosing 4k or not, the reviewers who liked to play fast paced FPS games preferred the higher refresh rates while RPG's etc looked absolutely stunning in 4k and gave a far more emersive experience, i tend to play FPS Campaign modes and RTS so i suppose i could treat myself to a 4k as i tend not to play fast paced multiplayer and battle royale games.

To be honest the more i think about it i am really on the fence and am hoping that some comment or review would tip me one way or the other, its just a shame we couldn't have our cake and eat it with a 4k monitor running at refresh rates of 240hz, that would be amazing. i have a budget of £4500 to spend on a gaming pc with monitor and peripherals, i will probably wait and keep listening and watching reviews as they come out until January 2019 then i will make the decision to go 4k or not, the savings will come in handy if i do decide to go 4k, i have a gaming laptop with a 8gb GDDR5 gtx 980M so there is no rush.

If Spydertracks sees this topic he might be able to offer a very good personal perspective on this as I think he has both 4k 60hz and 1440p 144hz. If he doesn't see this in the coming days, perhaps PM him. :)

Hiya. The Ouss is correct, I have a 144hz 1440p and a 60hz 4k. They’re both gsync. TBH I usually play on the 1440p screen but this is more to do with the gtx1080 struggling a bit at 4K. I did play Rise of the Tomb Raider entirely on the 4K screen and it was beautiful.

I would say pretty much what you’ve read. If you’re playing fast paced FPS games, stick to 1440p high refresh. If you’re mostly offline play, and you’re plumping for a card that can handle it which you are, then definitely consider 4K, you have to see it to believe it, simply stunning.

Thank you SpyderTracks because i don't play multiplayer or competitive online games i will go for the 4k monitor, the only question would be which one to go for, it looks like pc specialist don't do the 144hz ones?

Well, even the 2080 ti won't push 4k 120hz in many AAA titles with the settings turned up. It can struggle to keep 60 on ultra.

Also, those monitors are first gen and £2000 or so. I'm not sure you want to be an early adopter on that. Maybe get a 4k 60hz IPS monitor with gsync for ~£600 if 4k is attractive.

What about this for £918 ASUS 34" ROG SWIFT PG348Q 3440x1440 curved ultra-wide IPS panel running at 100hz?, not quite 4k but a good alternative?

Those are supposed to be great. And I always forget they exist for some reason :S

If you have any absolute favourite games, make sure they play nice with 21:9 resolution.

Personally, if it were up to me, I think this is the kind of Screen I would go for, they are cinematically beautiful and lend a real depth to the game. I think keynes, one of the other moderators on here has one, perhaps not that exact model, but an ultra-wide and absolutely loves it.
