Reasonable CPU temps on new laptop (Optimus IX)

Hi everyone,

I just received a new laptop, the specs of which are below.
Right now I am just browsing the internet, and downloading a game from steam, but my CPU temps are hovering around 65-80 degrees. Is this normal? I would have thought for such light activity it should be lower. Once I install a game I will test that and see how high the CPU/GPU gets.

Cheers!

I might have expected that too, although some games/clients can have high CPU load as they download - I suppose as the material gets decompressed/decoded or whatever magic goes on behind the scenes at your end. And browsers depending on addons or the web page can cause relatively high CPU load.

Check task manager to see CPU load (check per logical CPU, not just total %). And use the processes tab to see what, if anything, is putting load on the CPU.

And of course, check temps while gaming once you have downloaded the game.

I briefly stress tested it (using Prime 95) and in a few seconds the temps on all CPU cores shot up to 90+. Core 3 went to 98!

Then, I closed everything except a temperature monitoring program, and got the following:

Do these seem normal for stress testing and/or basically idle? I will check what happens once game installs later.

Those idle temps in that screenshot seem normal enough (~48-51 degrees).

Prime95 especially with AVX load is very demanding and will cause very high temps. 90+ is not unusual for prime95.

I guess you should see what typical gaming loads and temps are like. You can also try Firestrike benchmark, which is free and tests the GPU and CPU, to see what very heavy gaming load temps could be like.

But I wouldn't start panicking yet. :)

I played some PUBG at medium settings, and the CPU cores were all in the 85-92 degree range, with some spikes upward (the maxima over the entire time I played for each core were 95-100).

Do those sound normal?

Thanks for all your help so far.

I think that's not really normal / acceptable for gaming temps.

Do you use the laptop on a desk with plenty of space around it, or on your lap / a bed / something that might clog the vents?

Is Clevo Control Centre installed and can you adjust the fan profile at all? Does this help?

It's also possible the laptop paste job wasn't ideal and a repaste could help.
