Advice on a 2nd Internal Hard Drive

Hi,

I was thinking of adding a 2nd Hard drive to my son's PC. The 1st is quite full. We have external Drives to store data but he needs something more longer term. Also, any advice on whether where to buy and ease of adding. Is it something an enthusiastic amateur can undertake.

Many thanks in advance.

So if you open the case you'll find the SATA ports on the motherboard:

Then you just need a SATA Data cable from that to the drive:

And then you'll need to find a spare SATA power connector from the PSU:

Personally I usually go for Western Digital HDD's, they go from performance drives in Blacks, to always on data drives in Red's through to cheaper end Blue's.

If budget is a major concern, then a standard Seagate Barracuda drive will do the trick.

The only thing you really need to make sure is that it's a 7200rpm drive and 3.5", then you can decide on budget.

You can always order a drive off PCS.

If shopping yourself, I've found Toshiba have some good offerings in their P300 and N300 ranges.

Avoid WD Blacks and Seagate Pros as the price premiums on these are absolutely phenomenal - easily twice the price of other HDDs.

I think this best explains the way to add a new drive. Tho in some you have to loose up the knots holding the drive to the case before you can be able to pull out the SATA cable of the old drive before inserting the new one.
