Hi everyone I'm new here and this is my first post I've ordered the PC below and am looking forward to receiving it, any thoughts on how it might perform. It's main use will be internet surfing and watching streaming video, with a small amount of video editing and converting. This PC is a direct replacement for my old Core 2 Duo 3Gh with 3G of RAM, it is rather old now and getting very slow (often have to restart browser to keep sound in sync) I am wondering how much better it will be.

The Ryzen 5 2400G will generally be faster than the i3 8100 for things like video encoding, and it has decent onboard graphics.
2x4gb 2400 MHz RAM should also improve performance (dual channel, higher frequency)
The 850 Evo is a good deal faster than the UV500 SSD
The Fractal Define S is better quality, or at least better at cooling, than the Silencio, while being very good for managing noise.
The AMD motherboard also has some features the H310 Intel one doesn;t like supporting fast NVMe SSDs to full PCIe 3.0 x4 in its M.2 slot.

Furthermore, you'll probably have more CPU upgrade options on the AMD platform should that be relevant down the line.

Hello and welcome! :)

Since you're a new user you won't be familiar with Oussebon, but where gaming hardware is concerned he is one of the most knowledgeable and experienced people on here. He is well worth listening to. :)

I only come here to get my ego stroked like that, basically. ;)

Although in fairness, pcaddy appears to have 0 interest in gaming hardware and the above build reflects that

I realise I didn't address this:

it is rather old now and getting very slow (often have to restart browser to keep sound in sync)
It will be a lot faster. I'm assuming your old PC doesn't have an SSD, so the 860 Evo will make this feel a lot faster. Browsers and Windows can use quite a bit of RAM, so 3gb is probably inadequate. 8gb should help a lot.

The CPU is a lot more powerful. I don't have any benchmark charts to post as they're of such different generations I can't imagine anyone will have done a straight comparison of the two. But in short, your old CPU is 2 cores at 3GHz. The R5 2400G is 4 cores and 8 threads (i.e. each CPU having 2 'virtual' cores) running over 3GHz, and due to a more modern architecture each 'Hz' of the CPU gets more work done.

You could of course add an SSD and more RAM to your existing PC and perform a clean install of Windows. That would likely pep performance up, perhaps quite a lot, but nothing compared to a new system especially for video encoding. And you may not want to invest in buying more RAM for an older system you'll probably replace before long anyway, especially with RAM not being very cheap right now. But it's an option.

Thank you for your insights, I have actually ordered and paid for it's in build at the moment and hopefully in testing tomorrow.
Yes I'm not at all interested in gaming I used to years ago but I am completely useless at it but enjoyed playing with the PC but when they all became online mainly I didn't bother as I don't really want to play against other people.
I built the PC I have now but I found it was about the same price to have it built for me this time, so being a lazy old pensioner I took the easy way. I didn't really consider upgrading as it's eleven years old now and it must be nearing its end.
I was only interested in what people thought of the spec I've chosen, for what I want to do, which will be streaming, a bit of recording streams and some video conversion.
I thought that this spec would be capable of doing that. I have in the past thought of adding a SSD to my current PC but chose to wait until I upgraded.
Anyway thanks for your reply and insights. I'm awaiting it with baited breath, can't wait for a usable PC again.
