[ubuntu 18] optimus laptop died and came back to life, why?

i have not been able to get the nvidia drivers working under ubuntu 18. (IIRC they worked out of the box under ubuntu 17). no matter how i try to install or enable the drivers, after i reboot the screen is blank. i have learned how to recover, i boot up again in single user mode, this time i can log in, and i set the graphics back to nouveau.

last night i was tinkering with this, i tried again a few times to enable the nvidia drivers, and after a reboot the system did not come up at all - no pcspecialist logo, no bios, no grub, no login prompt, just a black screen. the only sign of life was that the power button and keyboard were lit up. i did a hard shutdown by holding down the power button for a few seconds, then tried again, same thing.

i left the machine for a few hours and tried again and this time it came back up. it booted normally and is again running the nouveau drivers and seems to be working normally.

what did i do wrong? the only thing that changed between the last failed attempt to reboot, and the successful boot, was that i left the machine alone awhile - why did it fail in the first place, and why did it start working again? the machine was plugged in the entire time, so i don't think it was a dead battery. the earlier complete lack of startup smacks of a hardware problem but i can't think of anything that i could have done in the course of monkeying with the drivers that would have damaged the hardware - the most extreme thing that i did was a hard reboot.
