Difference in laptops?

Hi all,

Could someone please explain to me the difference in the laptop's? So you have Recoil, defiance, octane, etc etc....You can pretty much kit these out with exactly the stuff inside (processor, ram, hard drive) so whats the difference? Is it the screen? The cooling? Looking for a gaming system for around £2000 -£2200, just a bit confused on which one to go for as a base.

Thanks.

Edit: Where are my manners, hi there!

They're all different makes of Chassis. Think of a PC shell, however all of the fans etc are different and so are the ports (USB, Thunderbolt, Display ports etc).
For the most part I believe that out of those selections they are Clevo bar the Recoil which is Tongfang.

They all also support different displays, they all use 1080p 144 hz channels but the Octane has the option for a 4K 60hz display.

Keyboards also vary greatly.

At your budget you may be able to push towards an octane.. I've purchased what I'd consider a top spec Recoil II RTX (2070) and I'm extremely happy with the performance and I can vouch for the running temps too. My machine was just short of £1,800.

Different chassis allow different hardware combinations.

For instance some laptops will only let you have an RTX 2060 or an RTX 2070 Max-Q, while others let you have a 'full' mobile RTX 2070, or even a 2080. The Octane offers desktop CPUs as opposed to mobile CPUs in the other chassis (though for gaming that's not usually very relevant). So the kit they have inside (or at least the choice of kit inside) isn't exactly the same across all chassis.

The chassis are made by different companies (Clevo, Tongfang, Quanta). They will have different cooling arrangements. However, it is not the case that More £ = Cooler Components. They're just designed differently, to accommodate their respective components. 'Chassis A' might have better cooling than 'Chassis B' - but the components might still run at the same temperatures or even higher temps in Chassis A because it sports beefier components that produce more heat.

Some laptops have a g-sync screen. Most don't.

The chassis are different sizes and weights (Recoil tends to be a bit lighter than average, Octane is larger and heavier).

They will have different display outputs / USB connections / etc which could be relevant if you were using high end or multiple external monitors.

People can suggest specs for you to consider - but first:

1) What size of laptop are you looking for? 15.6" max? Or is larger okay?

2) Do you definitely need a laptop? How portable do you need the system to be? Could a desktop work instead?

Thank you both for your responses..

I would prefer a 17" screen actually, It really needs to be a laptop just because I don't have the room in my current house for a desk, chair, monitor etc etc, so it's not that I want it to be portable as such, I just don't have the room although I really would love one Desktop...

I could probably stretch to £2500 but would prefer staying around £2000, however I am very aware you get what you pay for..

Thanks.

One thing to bear in mind is in-home streaming via steam, where you get a PC to run a game, and then play it on another PC streamed over your local network.

If you're going to be in that house / with that constrained space in the house for years, maybe the laptop is still the better choice, but if your circumstances are likely to change in the near-mid term you could consider in-home streaming as a solution.

For a 17.3" laptop, I think the Recoil II would be worth looking at. Your options are more limited at 17.3" anyway.

The 2TB HDD is only 5400rpm which isn't ideal, but it's the only 2TB HDD offering there is. Although you can always consider network storage instead. You can probably squeeze a NAS into your house somewhere.

Ok that’s great, I’ll have a look at that then thank you, I don’t mind spending another few hundred to help the hard drive.

Just say I could find the space for a desk.. could I build a good desktop for this kind of money? I guess I would have to buy a chair, desk and monitor on top as well, but just out of interest?

Thanks for your help.

NB that a desktop 2060 is pretty similar in performance to a mobile 2070. I picked a smaller SSD because cheaper and because you can add larger, cheaper Sata SSDs as upgrades for games if you really want. But customise the storage how you want obviously.

Chair and bits of your choice, but you could afford a nice 1440p 144hz gsync monitor e.g. Dell S2716DG (or 24" version S2416DG if space is tight). Which would probably be a lot nicer than a much smaller 1080p 144hz screen sans gsync.

Plus the chair (I have an Ikea Markus for £160) and desk (Ikea again, mine's Galant I think but they seem to have switched to Bekant ~ £130). No need to stick to ikea, it's just to make the point it's doable within your budget.

But £400/450 for the monitor, £150 for a chair, £150 for a desk is £750, plus peripherals of your choice could be £30-£200 depending how much you want to splash, still well within £2500 and possibly within £2k depending what you buy.

Ok, that seems pretty decent, its got me thinking anyway...I need to think about what I should do. Maybe I should have a jiggle (space is taken up by my Xbox set up at present, but I could run that on my monitor) I understand with pcs I can swap the parts out too once redundant as opposed to a laptop where I’m stuck with what I buy... I’ll have a think! Thank you for taking the time to reply to me... one last question, 32g ram over 16GB of ram is it nessacary?

Thanks again.
