Laptop BSOD When charger is plugged in

So, in short. The laptop works fine without the charger connected, but if I insert the charger it will instantly BSOD, the laptop charges fine while powered off, any suggestions? The error seems fairly random though System_Thread_Exception_Not_Handled seems to be the most common, if that helps?

When you plug in the laptop it will go into high performance mode and probably switch over to dedicated graphics (assumption), which could be the cause but it's impossible to know without the failing component on the system_thread_exception page.

Can you post your full specs?

What driver is your nvidia card on?

This is the only info I have, if it'll help?

Brand: Clevo
Model: P650RE

Did you buy it from PCS? Is it still under warranty? If you log into your main PCS account, you may find the BIOS update in there.

Reason I ask is because if it is under warranty, then you'll want to call PCS and go through the BIOS update with them as they specify any BIOS updates need to be done through them to retain warranty.

Personally, I would give them a call anyway to get them to talk you through it because BIOS updates on Clevo's aren't a standard process, and the potential to get it wrong means a dead laptop, so penalty is quite severe.

But you can download all drivers direct from Clevo here:

https://www.clevo.com.tw/clevo_down.asp?lang=en

I believe the section for your laptop is under the below selection:

It is from PC Specialists, but I bought it from someone else, after they bought it from PCS! And that was a few years back so I don't think warranty applies anymore, but I'll give that a go, thank you!

For a BIOS update I’m sure they’d help you out even though it’s out of warranty, but hopefully the reinstall has cured the problem anyway.

Additional: If neither the reinstall, or BIOS update fix it, then it points to a dead dedicated GPU in which case you'd have to run it with the GPU disabled and just run off the integrated Intel graphics. It would still work fine for normal browsing and programs, but you wouldn't be able to game on it.

The re-install hasn't helped, and yeah that bios stuff seems a little confusing don't want to risk bricking the laptop anymore than it already is for sure, how would I disable the GPU? I'll give that a go.

The GPU is upgradeable so I will be able to replace it, if that winds up being the cause. Which is better than having to purchase an entirely new laptop!

If you open up the nvidia control panel, go to "Manage 3d Settings" and select the preferred graphics processor to on board graphics in the global settings.

Sorry, I'm a bit late to this party. :)

As I understand it, you've done a clean install of Windows but what version?
Did you delete all system drive partitions and create a new partition structure?
Did you install ALL required drivers (Device Manager will show you that)?
Where did you get your drivers from?
What configuration changes did you make to Windows (if any)?
What other software did you then install (if any)?

What happens if you plug the charger in and then switch it on? Does it still BSOD?
What happens if you remove the battery, plug the charger in, and then switch on? Does it still BSOD?
How long will the laptop run on a fully charged battery (assuming 'average' use)?

A BIOS update would be a last resort and I would definitely speak to PCS first, they can probably tell you whether it's necessary (depending on what version of Windows you use) and/or whether it will help, but as suggested above there are many things you should probably look at first.

:)

Sorry for the terribly late reply, but it's Windows 10, the most recent, I installed it onto an entirely new drive, I have installed all the required drivers, I got them from Windows it's self, and Nvidia's website. And I installed Steam/Furmark for some testing, if I plug it in it crashes, if I leave it plugged in while it reboots it'll crash on startup. It will still crash with the battery unplugged, and the laptop will run until the battery goes flat under normal use. Though a weird quirk is if I have furmark running in fullscreen and plug the charger in, it stays on until I end furmark?

Did it come with Windows 10, or did you upgrade from an earlier version?

If it came with Windows 10 then I think it's unlikely that a BIOS update would be a solution, though it could.

If it didn't come with Windows 10 then it' quite likely that a BIOS update might be needed.

Either way you currently (mostly) have a brick so updating the BIOS is probably a no-brainer. I would still speak to PCS before you do that however, they will know (or be able to find out) whether you need the latest version or whether some earlier version would be more stable for you.

If a BIOS update doesn't fix it then I think you're looking at a hardware issue, and the Furmark 'test' might point to the GPU??
