15,6" RECOIL II - i7 8750H - HOT

So my new laptop arrived yesterday. Mega excited I got everything setup and a fresh install of Windows 10 done.

Fired up Battlefield V as a first test case. Monitoring CPU temperatures out of interest using MSI Afterburner and I became a little shocked. 5 minutes of game play was sitting me comfortably at 95degrees....

This laptop is sat on an open bottom metal laptop holder allowing for HUGE amounts of airflow.

I did pay for the more expensive "Thermal Compound" to be used as I expected temperatures for the CPU wouldn't be terrific.

To stop the laptop from turning into a toaster I have used ThrottleStop and I have applied an undervolt on to the CPU which now puts it into running at a more comfortable 75-80degrees on max load.

Anyone else experienced something along these lines?

Thanks and would appreciated any suggestions.

I don't know if I am allowed to open the laptop and do a repast or if that would void my warranty? Also would this even make much of a difference?

Hi,

I have a very similar machine but the 17.3” version with an RTX 2070. I paid for the better thermal paste as you have. In extreme use, I’ve seen 85-87 Celsius (whilst playing on my lap in bed) which made me dig out my old cooling pad. It’s very rare to see it get past 80 now and usually averages in the late 70s (still playing on my lap on bed but elevated with cooling pad). All without undervolting which I will try out later on. The GPU never goes past 75 Celsius.

If, before all of your steps, the CPU was sitting at 95 Celsius on average that sounds very unacceptable to me and I’d be on the phone to PCS.

Hope this helps, keep us updated.

Just a side note, have you tried manually adjusting the fan speed whilst gaming through the gaming centre? On turbo none of my temps go above 70 Celsius but it sounds like a jet plane.

As above, those temps are extremely hot for a Recoil. The Recoil actually manages CPU temps well.

How is the fan noise? Any sign they're not running as fast as they should?

A call to PCS sounds advisable. Depending on how confident you are, you could open up the laptop and see whether a repaste is needed, or if there is anything obviously amiss with the heatpipes.

Edit: Oh, I see you asked:

I don't know if I am allowed to open the laptop and do a repast or if that would void my warranty? Also would this even make much of a difference?
If PCS did a bad paste job, it could make a big difference.

The Ts&Cs explicitly state you can open up the system

7.7Unlike with most computer companies, we allow you to open your case and install your own components without voiding your warranty on the following conditions:

  • if the actions of the person installing the components cause damage to the computer, your warranty will be void;
  • if you install components that are not purchased from us and they cause problems with your computer, your warranty will be void;
  • if you install components that are not purchased from us we will in no way support you in installing them or with any problems you have relating to the components you have installed.
  • we will support you in installing components purchased from us providing you have purchased them through the upgrade service available on your online account.
7.8The company reserves the right to suspend the warranty or refuse service if your Case, Motherboard, CPU or BIOS have been replaced without authorisation.
Any tampering, repair or modification by unauthorised personnel voids the warranty.

i.e. you're fine as long as you don't break it

Ok that is terrific! Thank you very much for clearing that up for me.

I will perhaps just do a repast of my own with some quality paste.

Thinking about - Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut.

Anyway, thank you all for the input!

Personally a big thumbs up to thermal grizzly, been using it for about 3 years and it’s excellent.

I had a very similar issue with my Proteus VI RTX2070. Was experiencing 98C when gaming.

Used throttlestop to apply a 140mV undervolt and now the temps have dropped right down to 78C which is fine. The 8750H is inherently a HOT running CPU and there are articles all over computer forums with people having the same issue.

Yeah I have actually applied an undervolt myself and it has allowed for the temperatures to now be around 75-80 tops. So it has pretty much fixed the temperature issue although my CPU no longer boosts to 4.2 I settle more around 3.9. I can't say I notice any difference in games so this seems like the best solution for now until I repaste and see if that does anything.

Yeah.
In the same boat. Had this a few months now but haven't actually used it very much. i7 8750H, gtx 1060, 16gb ram, 970 evo nvme, upgraded thermal paste. Just been playing Civ6 for 3 hours on and off. According to core temp I've hit 99 degrees on all 6 cores which is utterly unacceptable, all the time the bloody thing has sounded like a jet engine as well. Were it not for the fact I'm on an oil rig in a desert I'd be on the phone complaining right now.

You had a recoil 15.6" with a 1060 and the CPU was that hot? Really weird, as the chassis does actually handle temps very well. If the fans are at full speed as well, it sounds as though there's a fault with your unit. The Recoil does better than that.

I've sent a message to tech support, though as I said right now there is nothing I can do about it. I am disappointed as the 2 reviews I saw, Kitguru and Anandtech if memory serves, both commented on how good the thermals are.
Given how hot the chassis is getting there doesn't seem to be any problem with heat conduction. Keyboard is fine but the bar above it that houses the power and fan boost buttons is literally too hot to touch for more than maybe 5 seconds. It would actually burn you given long enough so clearly the heat is getting out of the CPU. Doesn't seem to be going the right way though.

I have actually now requested an RMA which they have approved.

Collected all the temperature data to show just how hot this thing is running.

Looking forward to seeing what the issue actually is when they get round to fixing it.

Any update on this? Have PCS gotten back to you with a fix? Having a very similiar problem to you. Recently got an Recoil RTX 2060 and temps while doing anything intensive are upwards if 90c

Same here, on default settings (no undervolt etc) I easily hit 98° under gaming load (Apex Legends). Have not checked if it is throttling but I am pretty sure it is (will see later today or tomorrow). I don't have a problem with high temps but the fan noise is insane.

I've been doing some undervolting of -125mV, also decreasing turbo boost to 3.4Ghz on all cores. Temperatures got a little bit better but still spiked to 95° in HwMonitor. I'm going to monitor average temps over a longer gaming period and post here.

Setup:
Recoil II RTX
i7 8750H
16 GB RAM
Nvidia RTX 2060

Have you gotten your laptop back already? Please keep us updated :)

Hey there!

Yes my laptop is now back and they reported that it had an issue with the motherboard which they replaced twice....

Very strange if you ask me!

Temperatures were a little bit better, they were hitting around 89-95 degrees during games. Fans running at full making it absolutely awful to be next to.

I have applied at -125mv on core and memory and now running two cores at 41 and the rest on 34. Hitting around 3.4ghz in Apex legends and now sitting at medium fan spin up. Not getting any higher than 77-80degrees in all games now.

On a side note I checked inside the laptop and the screws which were used to screw down the heatsinks and fans are so badly worn I can forget unscrewing them again and repasting... I will require a replacement set.

Oh and the light bar on the laptop wouldn't turn off using the control center. After contacting support via phone they sent me a special file which turned on its functionality again. They mentioned it was due to the replacement of the motherboards.

If that were mine I'd be contacting PCS immediately because that's not right. They should be able to replace a motherboard without damaging the screws for other components. That's not acceptable in my book.
