Need Advice on New Gaming PC!

Hi All,

Looking to switch from console to PC, but this being my first PC. The main game i wish to play is strategy games rather than action shooters.

I am unsure the processor will be able to handle these games? Maybe the 6 core ryzen 5 be better choice?
Any help great appreciated?

We love you Ukraine
What's your max budget and what monitor are you pairing it with, what resolution and refresh or make and model if you're not sure?

Hi SpyderTracks,

Currently max budget 1K, my current plan to cut cost is to you my 4K 49" TV. Not 100% sure what the resolution is off my TV but it should refer to this 3840 x 2160 pixels or 4096 x 2160. Current build is £936 ish. If you think i will need a monitor what you think i will need.

Just read getting the best single core thread like i5 is better?
Thanks

No.

It's 'better' in that if you pair it with a £700 graphics card and game at 1080p resolution, you'll get higher framerates than with an R5 2400G paired with a £700 graphics card. But it's also way, way more expensive and will result in compromises elsewhere on the build. An i9 overclocked on custom loop liquid cooling is better than an i5, but again for budget reasons you're not buying that either :) The words 'better' and 'best' are very dangerous.

Intel's CPUs are also more expensive than they ought to be at the moment due to supply shortages.

What you should be looking for is the best balance of performance you can get for the budget, and a platform that will support a range of future upgrades without overspending in the interests of trying to 'futureproof'

Maybe something like:

R5 2600 can offer better gaming performance than an R5 2400, while not being ludicrously more expensive.
RX 580 offers, overall, the same performance as a GTX 1060 but costs £70 less.
Larger SSD (120gb is a bit small really especially for gaming)
550W PSU will offer more freedom for GPU upgrades
Slightly more expensive case with more preinstalled fans for a bit better cooling and GPU upgrade options
Ultra Gaming motherboard has some nice additional features for ~£8 more over the TUF
Faster RAM. AMD Ryzen CPUs are said to benefit particularly from this and in any event some games do love faster RAM

An "equivalent" Intel build https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/saved-configurations/intel-z370-pc/X84YQw9wFH/ (depending how you count equivalence, the mobo has fewer features) would run you £70 more for no discernible difference in performance in most cases. Because with a mid range GPU you're going top be GPU bound most of the time anyway (which is normal and as it should be for gaming).

Also AMD's motherboards will support future gens of CPU which are likely to outstrip Intel's i5s and possibly even i9 CPUs anyway, so there are likel more upgrade options too.

Your TV will presumably be 3840 x 2160 and you can run games at 1080p on it fine with an RX 580 kind of GPU.
