2400Mhz RAM

Hello

Im considering a new gaming PC in a small form factor. I notice that 2400Mhz RAM can be ordered which is pretty cool. When I check the motherboard specs it says that the most the mobo can accept is 1600Mhz. Does this mean there is an overclock in place to make use of the faster RAM?

This is the spec I just made but its not set in stone yet;
Case
BitFenix Prodigy Mini-ITX Case (White)
Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-4770 (3.4GHz) 8MB Cache

Memory (RAM)
16GB KINGSTON HYPERX BEAST DUAL-DDR3 2400MHz X.M.P (2 x 8GB KIT)
Graphics Card
4GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 770 - 2 DVI, HDMI, DP - 3D Vision Ready

you dont need 2400mhz for gaming. May as well just stick with 1600mhz. In other words its absolutely overkill. haha

any reason for the small form factor?

I dunno what your budget is, but If i was going for a small case, i'd go for something like this.

Case
COOLERMASTER HAF XB GAMING CASE - Mint case - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=ZhjoYbVX1XU
Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™i5 Quad Core Processor i5-4670 (3.4GHz) 6MB Cache
Motherboard
ASUS® Z87M-PLUS: m-ATX, USB3.0, SATA 6.0, XFIRE -basically a larger better mobo
Memory (RAM)
8GB KINGSTON HYPER-X GENESIS DUAL-DDR3 1600MHz, X.M.P (2 x 4GB KIT)
Graphics Card
4GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 770 - 2 DVI, HDMI, DP - 3D Vision Ready
Memory - 1st Hard Disk
120GB KINGSTON HYPERX 3K SSD, SATA 6 Gb/s (upto 555MB/sR | 510MB/sW)

What is 2400Mhz primarily used for if not gaming?

Going back to the original post, would it be overclocked if the mobo only supports 1600Mhz as the options seem to indicate?

2 reasons for the small form factor really. First I like the idea of having a very powerful gaming PC in a tiny box. It seems like a contradiction. There's also the fact that even in a half case there is a lot of un-used space due to the variety of PC components people might want to use.

2nd, I may want to move it from my home to a room Im staying in during the week while I study. Im not sure if this will happen or not, I may just end up getting a new laptop instead. Id like to combine both for now but im not sure if a gaming laptop or small PC is the way to go.

My current rig is in a Fractal R3 case. Its really nice but even that has a lot of empty space in it. Helps with cooling I guess but with a single GPU that shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for the advice on the H40. Ill request a H60 instead when the time comes.

You want to overclock the memory?

It will provide better cooling and help your components last longer.

Thanks for the quick replies.

No I don't want to overclock the RAM. My original question was how is 2400Mhz RAM used on a mobo that only supports 1600Mhz? I probably shouldn't have posted the rig specs at the same time.

If the motherboard only supports 1600mhz then I wouldn't expect the memory to run higher than that. You could try to contact PCS for an official response.

Thats what I would expect too. It may be an option error on the config page. Some of the mobo's allow the use of the 2400RAM when overclocked but not all of them.

Infodump time! The current chipsets only "officially" support up to 1600MHz (might've heightened with Haswell), but are easily capable of higher, which the motherboard and RAM manufacturers make use of. I'm not sure why the official spec stops at 1600MHz, but I assume there's a good reason.

Unfortunately I can't really say whether the faster RAM is much better (it rarely is for gaming), since the CAS latency isn't included in the product name.
