4K / New Monitor Advice please

So, having bought a new PC very recently, I am thinking about getting a new monitor.
I am currently using a 27 inch BenQ 144Hz gaming monitor (TN Panel)

Happy at 27 inch for size, but thinking I want to move to the better (IPS type) panel and higher resolution than my current 1920x1080 one ... but here are my dilemmas:

I was planning on getting a 4k monitor - but having read some advice given on here to other forum users, I fear my new 'GTX980 ti' might not be powerful enough to give a good 4K gaming experience.. although I guess different games and different settings might mean some games would be ok and some would not.

Kind of not sure what to do now :/

I am aware in the next couple of months roughly, Asus and Acer are bringing out some decent looking new monitors with G-Sync which I like the sound of, I am limiting my search to a G-Sync capable monitor to make movement smoother encase fps is low...

On 4K, what I had been looking at was Acer XB271HK, this appeared interesting as it might be the first to run 4K at 75Hz with G-Sync.
(60Hz being thought to be the limit @ 4K as this was the max Display port 1.2 can do)

Or, perhaps not going with 4K at all, and going the 1440p route - best monitor I think I can find coming out is:
Asus PG279Q 2560x1440 IPS 165hz (also has G-Sync)

Neither of these are quite out yet, So, I guess I am seeking advice on what to do when the time comes:

1) Get a 4K one... I'd then get to try 4K which I must admit I would like to see and to have a go of.
I might find some things look and play good, and others not so much however...
Questions here might be, could I not just drop the resolution for certain games back down to 1920x1080 and still have a great screen and great fps?
I mean, if you half 3840x2160, you get 1920x1080 - so would a 4K monitor not scale perfectly at either resolution?, (I might then get the best of both
just flicking between resolutions for different games etc..
I don't know if that's a good plan or not as I've never seen a 4K screen at all yet in person... never mind at a lower resolution)
I'm not ready having just bought a new PC to buy another high end GPU, but I'd, then at least 'have' a 4k monitor.
Perhaps the 980ti might drop in price in the future and I can do SLI...
Unless even 2x 980ti STILL is not good at 4K and its just not worth going down this 4K path at all...

2) Forget 4K completely and stick with the one GPU, and go with a 1440p IPS G-sync monitor as hopefully a noticeable step up from what I have now perhaps?

3) Any other ideas/ option you might suggest ?

Thanks in advance for any advice... I know there is a lot of monitor related questions here :)
