Advice for daughters PC (I don’t know what I’m doing !!)

Hi - the spec of the PC I’m planning to buy is below. Does it look ok? At the moment my daughter mainly plays Roblox and Fortnite, but is keen to start playing Call of Duty. She’s also interested in editing video a bit.

Is the Spec ok? do the components match ok? Will it be easy to upgrade components at a later time if I need to?

any help would be great, as I’m a bit out of my depth here 😁. Thanks.

Hi Matt, welcome to the forum. Could you please answer a couple of questions which will allow us to assist?

What kind of budget are we working with? I love helping people spend their money wisely so if you can let us know the maximum we can work within those boundaries.

What monitor is this system going to be hooked up to? We’re looking for the make and model or the resolution and refresh rate. That info will allow us to match the graphics card to the screen and ensure there’s no bottlenecking.

Come back to us with the details and myself or another from the hive mind will do our best to help you out.

Hi. Thanks. the budget is £1,100. At the moment it would be paired up with an HP 25x monitor (144Hz, NVIDIA G-Sync and AMD Freesync compatible, 1ms response time). not sure if that’s any good or not, I just happen to have it spare. If it’s not good enough, I would probably buy a better monitor. Thank you so much for your help.

Any other advice out there. The latest spec I have is below. A few questione:

- is it ok to have just 1x1TB m.2? Should I have a different storage for the OS? If ok with just this, do I need to partition or not - I assume not. My daughter will just be playing games and doing homework. She may get into a bit of video editing at some point.

- do I need any additional fans for this system?

thanks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would not recommend that system. It is worse than the one I recommended above in every way (except where you've gone for unnecessary overkill with the WiFi card!). I'd strongly recommend you go for the system I recommended, or something close to it.

With your specific questions, 1x1TB M.2 is fine, albeit the budget option. In an ideal world, you could go for something like a 500GB boot drive and a secondary 1TB M.2 drive. This has various advantages, such as for when you reinstall Windows or suchlike, as well as potentially having a performance advantage in some circumstances (probably unlikely for what you've described). You could upgrade, but obviously it depends on your budget. Honestly there are probably other things I'd upgrade first (especially with the spec you've posted!).

And re fans, there's not much point to adding fans. Just get a good airflow-y case in the first place, such as the Lian Li 215 or the Corsair 4000D Airflow. The PCS one might be OK, especially for lower-end parts, but I wouldn't bank on it. Extra fans will struggle to make up for a poor case.

Yeah no to be completely blunt mate just so you can understand how we think when glancing at these things

Old CPU now and was barely good when it launched, new CPU's due out next month will put this firmly in the past.

The ASUS PRIME motherboards I just don't think are very good, not terrible but really not good either

Slow RAM, especially for a modern system, minimum I would recommend is 3200Mhz

3050 just isn't a good call for value, the 2060 is a stronger GPU and cheaper but the 6600 from AMD is significantly more powerful than both and around the same cost. The 3050 isn't worth it

Gen 3 SSD, Gen 5 SSD's are to launch any day now so they are just old now and very slow compared to Gen 4 speeds but will be firmly left in the past with Gen 5

Unsuitable PSU, it's basically designed for an office computer not for your needs

Wifi Card is extreeeeme overkill and completely unnecessary

Norton Anti virus is practically a virus itself, don't put that on there it'll cripple performance

Thank you so much guys. Your advice is invaluable to someone like me who really doesn’t know what he’s doing!! Latest spec shown below….I’ve taken your advice, with a few tweaks it would be good to get your views on:

case - I can’t persuade my daughter to change from the case. I case it’s just a Bit of a risk, but probably ok?

CPU - I’ve upgraded slightly to 5600X given it appears to be a bit better, and not much more. Does that seem ok with you?

processor cooling - I’ve currently selected the PCS Frostflow, on the uninformed presumption that it will give better cooling, and is only £13 extra. Make sense, or just silly?

Paste - again, as it’s only £9 I thought it might be worth adding - but really don’t know. Thoughts?

Wireless - the original one I selectEd is only £16 more, and I wonder if worth sticking with this (even if it is over-powered). In case it’s relevant, my internet at home is very fast (900 GBs).

Once again, I really appreciate your help.

If you really want to buy now and really want that case and keep it under £1200 then this would be my build

ASUS motherboards are just more reliable in experience and they come with the really good Wifi card that includes bluetooth. It's equivalent to the AX200

I went with a better SSD and a better PSU just to help slightly noise of the machine

The standard AMD cooler is actually pretty good and perfectly capable of handling the 5600 which is marginal in performance between that and the 5600x but it's slightly cheaper. It also generates very little heat so the CPU cooler will handle it no problem, I've included the better paste but honestly it's optional

In your shoes I'd buy a better case from elsewhere and send it in for PCS to build your PC in. It's really easy and will end up with a more efficient, quieter build. I'd suggest the 4000X from Corsair. It's exactly the same dimensions as the 4000D so you can be sure it will all fit just fine. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08C76W2WM

Thank you both so much for your help. looks like you both agree broadly on the spec, and the latest spec you sent steveyg looks good. Sck - I like your idea of buying a different case, and I will try and persuade my daughter to the 4000X In the morning.

sorry for the dumb question, but will the the included WiFi card on the motherboard handle the 900gb/s internet I have (it may not be a relevant / sensible question, but I just want to make sure I don’t end up not being able to utilise the fast Internet I’m paying for!!).

once again, thank you both so much.

I don't think anyone will recommend wifi to begin with mate, You want to be hardwired in whenever possible. I'd even go as far as to suggest getting another router/hub from your ISP to have next to any machine that needs it. Mine is directly beside my computer for example

Just doesn't make sense to hamper the one machine in the house that can actually utilise the speeds

Strongly agree with @sck451 though, the 4000D/X is a great case and you can buy a white one and have it shipped if that's something you'll consider?

Are you sure it's 900 gigabit internet access? I think that's impossible with today's standards: not only will wi-fi not do it, but even wired networking will struggle to get there: I'm not even sure the gigabit ethernet standard has been finalised yet. Networking equipment that can even touch those speeds will cost thousands of pounds.

I think it's more likely that you have 900 megabit ethernet (maybe advertised as gigabit?), which is 1000 times slower, but still very very fast. I get by on 70 megabit and it feels very fast still!

Lol…I said I didn’t know what I was doing!! You’re right sck….it is 900 megabit.

steveyg - unfortunately I don’t have an option of installing another router where the PC will be. Given I’ll need to use Wi-Fi, do you think the Wi-Fi Carson the motherboard is ok, or will the ASUS PCE Wi-Fi be an improvement?

speaking to my daughter later to persuade her to the 4000X - fingers crossed.

thanks

I'd say the motherboard WiFi is almost certainly going to be absolutely fine. It's WiFi 6, which should mean it'll be able to match almost any router and therefore won't be the performance bottleneck. If you do find it a problem, adding the card afterwards would be really easy.

Great - thanks. Now just left trying to persuade my daughter the 4000X is ok….not going well so far, she doesn’t like th look of it 🫣
