Advice needed... Editing & Gaming spec

Evening All (first post),

After 10 years of owning my current pc i've decided to upgrade... it will mostly be used for some gaming (not a heavy or pro gamer by any means) and Adobe premier pro for editing relatively basic video (mostly for YouTube / Instagram etc... some effects but not exactly Hollywood production)

So far after doing a bit of research, the below seems a good balance between decent performance and not overly expensive, but i would appreciate some feedback as although I have a basic understanding, i'm by no means an expert. I wan't something that will run smoothly and last a good few years

Case (not overly concerned on the look, just picked a random one)

Cheers

I would go for a much better selection of case
Spend less on the motherboard
Given your moderate editing use 16GB of RAM will be more than adequate
I would opt for the Nvidia 2060 for better compatibility with Adobe
You would be better selecting an M2 drive. The Stock PCS options are great value for money
650w is overkill, the 550w PSU is more than fine
If you need wifi select a better card

If you post the link to the build (where you copied the spec from with the link at the bottom) we can click on it and advise easier.

Thank you for the response! Would you say there is no benefit in having this motherboard? Such as “future proofing”? Also would 32GB of RAM benefit me over 16GB for editing?

I’m happy to pay a little extra to ensure I have a decent performing PC that can more than handle my requirements, as opposed to just “get back”

I’ve made some adjustments in line with your recommendations -

RAM can make a difference but if it is hobbyist editing then I'm quite confident 32GB would be wasted. I video edit in Premiere and use my system for all manner of tasks but I still don't need 32GB. That being said, the RAM is reasonably priced right now so if you wanted to , you could add it. I just don't want you wasting your money. Most would be looking to upgrade the processor and the storage options to the highest level before RAM would become the bottle neck for editing. What you have selected and what I have selected below is more than competent for any level of hobbyist editing.

If you plan to use after effects to edit anything greater than 1080p then 32GB would be the recommended minimum but if your uses are as you suggest then 16GB is what you want IMO.

I've tweaked your build a little bit. I've upped the storage considerably and allowed for a scratch drive. The scratch drive allows your editing to be stored on a separate drive. This allows very fast caching of the files you are working on for playback etc. It can also help with render times as each drive has only 1 lane of traffic. If you have 2 separate drives it allows, effectively, twice the processes going on with the storage.

If you are not going to be working on any particularly large files you may want to drop the second M2 drive to 512GB, there's no need to go OTT with a scratch drive. The OS drive I bumped up to 1TB as it's always nice to get a few games loading quickly and they are very large nowadays.

Other than that....

Case - There isn't a better option than the R6 IMO. If you want RGB go with the Corsair one just above it for £118.
Motherboard - Unless you need specific features of the X570, the B450 is more than fine. Good board and supports all current AMD chips and most likely the next gen too. X470 is a little pointless now IMO.
GPU - I've left the 2060 Super in as it's a fantastic card where the budget allows. It's compatible with Adobe etc. Bare in mind that it's likely OTT for your gaming requirements but it will never fall short in anything you want to do. It's ready for 1440p gaming if you wish to go down that route.
PSU - I've bumped this back up to the TXm you had selected before, only 550w, there is a difference in quality and layout here compared to the VS. It's worth it.
Cooler - You don't specifically need an AIO cooler but if the budget allows it'll keep things running cooler for longer and also adds intake/exhaust fans to keep the air circulating nicely.
Silver warranty - Minimum for any purchase here I would suggest.

Just a couple of things to add...

£17 for 1TB extra storage (I selected 3tb over the 2tb conventional. You could pocket the savings if it's of no use)
£44 for 500GB extra scratch (If you drop to 500gb for the scratch drive it will save £44, this is probably to be recommended)
£59 for the Super (The Super is way above what you need, you could pocket the £59 and not notice any difference at 1080p gaming. The Super is 1440p. Even the non-super isn't shabby at 1440p)

This looks perfect! Thank you, this may be a silly question, but if I do not select a DVD drive will I not have anywhere to input discs, I know they are a bit of a dying requirement anyway and I could always just get an external, but do you think it’s worth adding?

I may just pay the extra for 32GB, I do believe and appreciate your support, but it’s not much more and I know I’m more than covered then... lol

is the 3200 ram speed ideal then?

I wouldn't bother with a DVD drive to be honest. It limits your case options and it really is a thing of the past. If it's really required then an external drive would be my choice.

If you're happy with the budget then there's absolutely no harm in 32GB of RAM. 3200Mhz is the fastest that's reasonably priced. Faster the better with RAM, as long as it's not getting silly in cash (ahem, 3600mhz, ahem).

I took your advice and dropped the second drive to 512... if you think the 1tb would benefit for the extra £44 let me know, but if you think the 512 will be more than sufficient I’ll stick with this

Thanks for all the help 🙂

i do have one further question if possible... I know this is probably not a simple question, but if I was to go down the route of a laptop to match my requirements and performance, would I be looking at a great deal of cost more?

Thank you for this! I didn’t realise AMD didn’t do laptops... think I’ll stick with the desktop, it’s just handy being able to take the laptop about I intend on using it for an online business and although I’m not an avid traveller I do stay away from home frequently enough... but I should be able to do most from my phone as well

did you see the link I sent with the “final” desktop spec, I’d appreciate your thoughts

It looks great, should serve you very well 😊

Hi again, just wanted to update you and ask for some further advice

I have ordered the following (pretty much what we discussed, aside from one small change as the SSD drive wasn't available). I've also ordered an Alienware aw3418dw monitor.

I just want to check whether the RTX 2060 Super will be enough to use this monitor to enough of it's potential? Or would you suggest going for the RTX 2070 Super instead?

If you're going to drop £800 on a monitor then go for a superior graphics card. Defo 2070 super. Or even 2080 ti.

thank you for your response

The 2080 ti is significantly more expensive, do you think it's worth the extra from the 2070 super?

As above, that's a serious monitor. You're looking at the 2070 as a minimum. 2080 would be much more comfortable.
