Advice on a new build please.

Hello everyone, new to the forum.

Looking for advice on a new build.

Around 10 years ago I built this thing myself (Not from PC Spec)
Intel I5-3570k
Asus P8Z77-V Motherboard
8Gb DDR3 RAM Corsair Vengeance Low Profile
Asus Radeon HD 7850 DirectCU II Graphics Card (2GB GDDR5, PCI Express 3.0,
This thing is on its last legs I think.

I’m not a huge gamer (mainly Football Manager 2012 and Age of Empires)
I would like to try some new games in future though.
I use Photoshop quite a bit and do a little bit of video editing.
I guess I’m wondering where to start as I have been out of the loop for a while.
My budget would be between £800 - £1,000 I think.

At the moment I’m looking at these parts:
CPU – i5-12400F
RAM – 16GB DDR4 Corsair Vengeance 3200MHz
SSD – 500GB (not sure which one)
GPU – GTX 1650/60 – RTX 2060 (not sure)
Motherboard – I have no idea, very confusing choices.
PSU – Unsure on wattage
CPU Cooler – Would I require a cooler?
Case – A case with a disk drive bay would be preferable.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

Unfortunately I don't think you're going to get what you're after on the budget you have. You would need to lay out the importance of your uses to be honest.

Football Manager relies heavily on the CPU. I don't think you would need to worry about Age of Empires.
Photoshop loves a single threaded CPU but will also make good use out of a reasonable GPU for effects etc.
Video editing will use all the CPU you can throw at it and make decent use out of the likes of the 2060.

Forgetting the budget, the ideal system for you (keeping it sensible-ish) would be the 12600K paired with the 2060 GPU. You're likely looking around £1500-£1600 though (without Windows).

If the budget is strictly inside £1000 then there are going to be very real compromises required.

Come up with something similar to the above. Unfortunately component prices are still quite high so getting everything you want into your budget is quite a challenge.
Some possible edits to Scott's budget build: £25 to upgrade from 12400f to 12400. The integrated graphics on the CPU means that you can utilise Quick Sync, which is useful for video editing.
For gaming the stock cooler will be fine, but for more intensive editing tasks you might want to look at something with a little more oomph to keep temps down such as the Frostflow 150.
DVD drives are less common these days and many cases no longer support the drive. An external drive is the best way to go as it offers the most flexibility in case selection. If you're dead set on a case with a built in drive, I would recommend the Fractal Focus G out of the selection.
