Advice on Build for Animation

Hi folks,

I am looking to build a machine in the next couple of months, mostly for animating (This will be a work machine but I will do some gaming on it too) I mostly use Autodesk Maya and don't plan to do much rendering on this machine, just animating.
As I understand it, Maya doesn't really utilise cores when animating, but instead I would benefit from higher clock-speeds.

The other thing to note is that I will regularly need to animate remotely on a studio computer as well as locally. So it needs to also be as optimised as is possible for reducing latency when working remotely.

My budget is about €2000 but I am will to push that a little further if needed, as this is a work machine.
- I have a geeky interest that I am fighting to keep on budget, in light of the new Nvidia cards. My thoughts are to get a RT 5700 or delay and get a 3070 or 3080 when the dust settles from the hype. Ill have a better idea as to whether if I need it or just want it by then :D.
- I am using a Philips 32 inch E line 4K curved monitor at 60 Hz as my main monitor and a smaller 24inch curved Samsung as a secondary (Which means the 3080 would be over kill for games but I don't know if Maya can make the most of it.)

Thanks in advance for the help

Hiya

On that CPU, you would want the Strix X570 motherboard to handle the extra voltage requirements.

I would also suggest a better case.

Regarding the GPU, the 3700 would be ideal, the RX5700 - in fact any AMD card and any previous generation nVidia card - is now completely obsolete, the 3070 is literally double the power of the RX5700 for around the same cost.

Latency wise on remote connection, that's going to be more down to your internal network, internet capabilites and VPN if you're using one. That wifi card will be as good as anything at the local side.

Thanks Spydertracks, I really appreciate the input.

Regarding the case, what should I be looking out for other than what is aesthetically pleasing to me?
What would you recommend in the medium cost range?

I will hold out for the 3070 if I can, otherwise Ill have to dig deep for the 3080.

No problem.... yes, the 3080 certainly won't hurt, was just a budget thing for the 3070 as think that would do you for power requirements.

For case, I'd say Fractal Meshify C as a minimum with that build and anything above, but not the PCS SR-819 as it's got a very closed front end to air flow.

These GPU's are completely different in the way they dissipate air. Half the air motion is actually directed over the motherboard and CPU allowing for the case and CPU cooler to dissipate further.

As such, you need quite a premium case (with effect to airflow) to be able to effectively move the increased heat. These are generally more powerful cards in the wattage they put out also, so there's an additional cooling requirement there as well.

It remains to be seen how effective the "Founders Edition" cards are with their thermal design. My expectation is quite high actually, I think since the 2000 series redesign, nVidia have made serious attempts to improve the airflow on their FE cards and it's definitely worked. Judging by the design of these new cards, it's not something that's been slapped on without too much care, there's a significant amount of research and design gone into that layout. It will be interesting to see 3rd party reviews when they're out.

That is great info, Spydertrack. Thanks a million.

I hadn't a clue where to start with mother boards and I didn't even realise I needed to know more about the cases.

Ill hold out for the 3000 cards releases and I'll mostly likely make the splash for the 3080 and the higher watt PSU. Lets hope you predictions are on the nose regarding the thermal designs.

Thanks again mate. your time is most apprecieated
