Advice on gaming spec - balancing budget and futureproofing for new GPU range

Hi All,

I am upgrading to a new PC as my old one is kind of outdated , my current PC has lasted me 8 years so it was well worth the money and this great community helped me build it at the time.

I will primarily use this for gaming. League of legends. Path of Exile, BG3, Ark and so forth. My goal with the new PC is to get a very good pc that will late me a good while again. I am thinking of going with an average GPU so that I can upgrade it in a year to one of the latest specs launching early next year such as the 5080/5090.

I would like advice on the whole build but I am especially unsure of the following :

My PC case - is this a good one with enough space and cooling
Ram - Do I need to upgrade to 64GB? I think 32Gb will be sufficient for the games I play but will it be enough in 2 years?
CPU - is this good value for money?
Motherboard - do I upgrade to X870 for future proofing?

By budget for this purchase is 3k and I will be saving for a high end graphics card next year so I want to balance performance with my budget knowing that I will upgrade the GPU soon.

My PC spec :

Is it just gaming or is there any high core workload? For gaming only (or mostly) then you want an X3D CPU, and the current best one is the 9800X3D.

The PSU is under-powered for modern GPUs, and is doubly-so as it's an older ATX2.4 spec and non-modular one that doesn't have the power spike protections of the newer ATX3.1 models (1200W RMx Shift is the current 'lowest' one with the spec you'd need).

The PCS cases are not known for being high quality, so I've swapped it for a better white one - but if it's the 'aquarium' style you're after then this can be swapped for the black Corsair 6500X or Lian Li O11Dynamic Evo.

Case
CORSAIR iCUE 5000X RGB MID TOWER ATX CASE - WHITE - better quality case than the 'unknown quality' PCS Lumin, and comes with better fans
Processor (CPU)
AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D Eight Core CPU (Up to 5.2GHz/104MB w/3D V-CACHE/AM5) - the fastest CPU (by a large margin) in about 95% of games
Motherboard
GIGABYTE X870E AORUS ELITE WIFI7 (AM5, DDR5, M.2 PCIe 5.0, Wi-Fi 7) - latest platform with wifi 7, USB4, PCIe5.0
Memory (RAM)
32GB Corsair VENGEANCE RGB DDR5 6000MHz (2 x 16GB) - 32GB will be plenty for gaming for a good few years
Graphics Card
16GB GIGABYTE RADEON™ RX 7600 XT GAMING OC - 2 x HDMI, 2 x DP - no change
1st M.2 SSD Drive
512GB SOLIDIGM P44 PRO GEN 4 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 7000MB/sR, 4700MB/sW)
1st M.2 SSD Drive
2TB SOLIDIGM P41+ GEN 4 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 4125MB/sR, 3325MB/sW)
External DVD/BLU-RAY Drive
8x Slim USB 2.0 External DVD-RW - no change
Power Supply
CORSAIR 1200W RMx SHIFT SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS GOLD, ULTRA QUIET - current gen CPU/GPU deserve a current gen PSU, with better quality components and more room for future GPU needs
Power Cable
1 x 1.5 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead, 1.0mm Core)
Processor Cooling
CORSAIR iCUE H150i ELITE LCD XT RGB CPU Cooler - the new TITAN range have better fans & pump, but if you want to have the LCD screen then you'll have to stick to the ELITE LCD version
Thermal Paste
STANDARD THERMAL PASTE FOR SUFFICIENT COOLING
Extra Case Fans
4 x Corsair RS120 ARGB PWM Fan - newer fans to go with the ELITE LCD AIO, but you'd swap these to the RX version if you wanted to change to the TITAN AIO, so that they all use the same, newer platform
Sound Card
ONBOARD 6 CHANNEL (5.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD)
Network Card
ONBOARD 2.5Gbe LAN PORT
Wireless Network Card
NONE OR ONBOARD Wi-Fi (MOTHERBOARD DEPENDENT)
USB/Thunderbolt Options
MIN. 2 x USB 3.0 & 2 x USB 2.0 PORTS @ BACK PANEL + MIN. 2 FRONT PORTS

Hi Tony,

Thank you for the feedback , i have made those changes to the build , one more question do you think it worth upgrading the GPU to a RX7800XT while i wait for the new series of GPU's due in Q1 2025 ?

If you want to play 1440p then go for 7800xt, for 1080p its not necessary,

Not if you’re planning on swapping it out for a new, beefier one in Q1/Q2 ‘25.
