AMD vs Intel

As a newbie to computers (wel not to computers, but to the technical spec behind them) i have no ideas abut the differences between the two makes of CPU's, what are pros and cons of both. Is there a benefit to one over the other one?
I primarliy want a computer for general tasks word processing, films, web browsing etc, some light gaming (the like of football manager) and using photoshop (not massively, juts touching up and editing stil photos).

I have been looking at i7-870 and Phoneix (thanks) suggested a AMD PHENOM II X6 1075T

Thanks
Matt

If you've got plenty of money to spend Intel is the one to go for if you want the best of the best, if you want high performance and save some money while at it then AMD is the way to go. It's just down to what you can afford and how much your willing to spend or save.

For what you want to do go AMD and save some money, just make sure you get a Nvidia GPU to go with it. It will run like a dream.

Look at there http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_value_available.html
Comparision of speed / price of all available CPUs in markets. You will see there - AMDs are cheaper with same or better speed. All modern CPUs from Intel, including Intel i3, i5, i7, are much more expensive, comparing cheap to Phenoms x4, x6.

100% agree. I have that team and it's unbeatable.

There are many users on the forum who own AMD powered machines and have given them the thumbs up. I've also got one on the way too.

Theres no issues with performance (expect high performance from their chips). Slenious summed up the Intel / AMD debate well.

I've ran both Intel and AMD rigs and I prefer AMD for the price and barely notice any drop in performance with my use. I expect you'll get fan boys for both slating the other but thats always going to happen.
I'm currently running a great new AMD Phenom II X4 970 3.50Ghz coupled with a Nvidia GTX470 and I've got to say I nearly had what Jeremy Clarkson calls a "crisis" when I started using it XD hehe You won't go wrong mate.
