Hi all,

Just wanted to see if anyone has used the Oculus Quest via oculus link with any success on PC specialist laptops? The oculus link seems to be sensitive to certain USB ports and thunderbolt ports and as I’m close to a new laptop purchase and want to make sure it runs ok. Thanks.

All the Oculus Link requires is USB 3, can either be type A or type C, doesn't matter, it's just the throughput of USB 3 that's required.

It may be the cable your commenting on, as a lot of 3rd party connector cables won't work, it's best to use the official Link connector cable.

Apparently this is the officially recommended 3rd party cable:

Thunderbolt isn't USB 3, that's why, so won't carry a USB signal and you'd have to use a converter anyway which probably wouldn't work.

Thunderbolt is not USB , they're 2 separate things. It's just that thunderbolt is carried OVER usb C

You'd have to use a USB C port or USB A 3.0 port.

I was under the impression thunderbolt ports can transfer as usb 3.1 depending on cable. The official link cable usb c - usb c is 90 quid so want to get right. Other chassis with PCS have usb c ports that aren’t thunderbolt but do like the look and feedback of the vortex.

I wouldn't use the thunderbolt port on the vortex (which I would also look at, it's the best gaming chassis imho), I would just use one of the USB 3 ports.

I reckon it wouldn't work over the thunderbolt port because you've got 2 transport protocols running down one pipe. Not suitable for this kind of application.

Plus the added benefit that the cable is 8.99 for 10 metre.

It’s 10 feet so 3m which should be fine anyway. Just that official cable is 5m and can charge the quest at same time where the others can’t. I get your point on the USB ports though and especially as you say the vortex is best chassis. Making me think to get it anyway.

Where does it say that only the official cable can charge the quest? That doesn't make sense as the cable connects to the link and the link to the quest, they're both USB, either USB C or USB A carry the same current and they're both going into the same port on the Link. It's even only 3A rather than 5A that the USB is capable of, so shouldn't be an issue with a 3rd party cable unless you were not using a powered USB port.

Sure I read it a few times but valid point. And I guess there will be plenty of new 3rd party cheaper cables coming on market. So the vortex a good chassis over the rest?

Personally if it were me, I'd only be looking at 2 chassis, the vortex and the octane.

The Octane is overpowered really for gaming and as such has drawbacks with cooling.

The Vortex ticks all the boxes, the screen is probably the best that PCS offer with GSync and the panel quality. Plus it has the added benefit of Thunderbolt for things like running an eGPU in the future once the in built GPU has gotten too old.

It's an absolutely beautiful chassis and manages temps very well.

It would be my go to option.

I'm currently still using the Vortex IV from 2014 which is still going strong. It's a fantastic chassis!

Fantastic, sounds like a winner then.
Can you buy the official USB C connector from a 3rd party retailer like amazon?

If so, then you could buy it and try it and make sure it works in the Thunderbolt port. If it did, happy days, if not you could swap it for the Anker.
