Hi looking for some advice. Looking for computer for our son who is an Aspiring animator YouTuber and casual gamer. (fortnite, Minecraft).
He will be using a huion pen display and 1080 monitor (to up upgraded in the future.) On free 2D animation and drawing software to start with. With the ambition to use Adobe creative suite and modelling software like Blender.
Want to get him something that wont hold him back and will last a least 5 years before he need to upgrade.
This spec is the top end of my budget.

Hi there and Happy New Year,

In terms of your spec, it'll be okay-ish for now but not in 5 years time.

In summary, I'd recommend more disk space and at least 32GB or be prepared to upgrade both later.

Also, add Unreal Engine to your list of applications - it's great for film and game making.

Diskspace: Blender is quite lightweight, has a small install footprint and out of the box will run really fast on the spec you've highlighted.

Add-ins for Blender are either free or cost very little but can require huge amounts of disk space. For example:
  • City Builder will require 7GB disk space installed
  • True Terrain Pro will need 4GB
  • HDRi Maker needs a whopping 46GB - yes 46GB!
Yes, these are at the extreme end and you may not use them now but I got caught out by not having enough disk space. As my experience grew, so did my disk and memory requirements. An external plug in drive was woeful as a work around!

Depending on the quality and length of your render, the output frames can run in GB's and especially so if you go with the OPENEXR format.

Adobe will also require diskspace not just for installation but also for caching, 10GB for the cache at a minimum.

Graphics Card: RTX 2060 Is a good starting point. You can configure Blender to use the Graphics card for rendering and the performance will be dependent on the output quality you've selected.
My advice is to stick with NVidia - the drivers simply work better with Adobe and Blender.

Memory: 16GB is the absolute minimum and Adobe software will work. Get 32GB or higher if you can stretch to it.

CPU: Again, it's a good starting point but AMD provide more performance at the same price point. Do some research and price up an AMD CPU system - any savings you make can go towards more memory or storage.

I'm a frequent Blender and Adobe (After Effects, Premier Pro etc.) user for modelling, key frame animations, compositing etc. All of these packages need memory, disk space, a good GPU and CPU. It's a very exciting time to be involved in CGI - there's tons of free software around such as Davinci Resolve, Hit Film etc but they do require more powerful systems to use.
