Hi. I have received my 17.3 vortex today - it handles well. A whole\lotta learning curve going on....new keyboard;win 8 & that darned fruit! I have a 120gb ipod which is full (uncompressed) & gee a good job my old laptop held up. Anyhow, that is for another debate. I thought that maybe the discs provided were for 'backup'? CD;DVD & blu ray won't work? So I installed the discs I received - which I must say the the discs were horendous! . Took me back nearly 30yrs - changing certain things within config.sys & exex doc bac etcr. I had to 'click' each 'chapter' individually & wait for 'whatever was gonna appear' & gee, I thought it was bad sorting out a printer (years ago) .
Any advice before I ring? Ringing is the last resort for me, as I feel I'm a failure (sort of) when i phone for 'argh help'. :(
Why doesn't my optical drive work?.

I am bit confused what the problem is :) Backup discs? You cannot access the drives on the CDs provided?

Thats what I understood from the post. Gaaron, could you perhaps rephrase your original post to make it clear what hte issue was? Were you trying to load software from some of the discs you received with the laptop (almost certainly wither the windows disc, driver CD's or perhaps blu-ray playing software?)? None of which should have chapters etc, they will just boot up and install the software. Unless you're saying the discs didn't work at all? In which case that might be a separate issue :)

It's with regard to the optical drive. My CD/DVD or Blu ray won't play. I've gone into to the place whereby you can click on the drive - but my media won't play :( So I thought I should install the discs provided from pcs, but to no avail (the pcs discs
did appear in a round a bout way - I searched )

You should have received a driver for the blu ray player, it should be an individual disc.

Blu-Ray movies won't play natively on a PC (as far as I'm aware) you need the specialist software (something like PowerDVD or such like).

How do you mean the PCS disc's didn't appear straight away and you had to search? Like when you went into the disc drive 'folder' it was empty but you could search the disc itself?

I rec'd: Clevo windows 7 drivers (it is win 8 I have paid for); PowerDVD 10; office home & student 2007 (I have legitimate); & notebook device drivers & utilities + users manual. ir Windows 8 os disc is in the post... I think pcs wanted to dispatch the notebook so it would help with their percentage quota, prior to obtaining win 8 os disc

Have you try reinstalling PowerDVD? You paid for windows 8 but you didn't get the OS disc?

sorry steaky360, I realise I'm not explaining myself plainly. (have been nearly on laptop for 24 hrs - ) . My trying a blu ray was supposed to be my final 'oh that's brill', before getting a cup o tea.
The discs didn't appear as in a 'pop up'...I had to go into the computer menu & select. I had win vista & have now win 8 , so there's a bit of a learning curve, into finding where things are.

thats correct. They are posting win8 disc to me (out of stock at the time), but they sent me a win 7 driver disc?. I'll try the PowerDVD again :D

Ah right, I would guess the autoplay settings just need tweaking for the 'pop-up' issue. Once you install PowerDVD that should sort out playing blu-ray movies etc. for you. If you need driver updates immediately you can always get them from the web if required :)

this is partly what I get when I place the PowerDVD10 in the optical drive.....it doesn't appear automatically or via a pop up menu - I have to go into 'computer' etc to find it. ah it won't paste even tho I copied :( I'll try a diff way .
steaky, the poewerDVD won't install - I can't find an exe file :(

If you're trying to upload a picture you will need to use the buttons to "insert image" and upload it or you can host it on a site of your choosing (image shack etc. etc. etc.) and paste the link in square brackets brackets like these [**IMG] [**/IMG] but without the asterix's

However, to set Autoplay settings in Win8 (which might help)
Courtesy of http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-8/autoplay-faq
To change an AutoPlay action

  1. Open AutoPlay by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, tapping Search (or if you're using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right corner of the screen, moving the mouse pointer down, and then clicking Search), entering AutoPlay in the search box, tapping or clicking Settings, and then tapping or clicking AutoPlay.
  2. In the drop-down list next to the device or type of media, choose the new action that you want.

EDIT:

the poewerDVD won't install - I can't find an exe file :(

If you try changing the autoplay settings to open discs on insert (or play media... depending on what it says) that might help.

If not there should be a file called 'install' or something similar try that even if it isn't a .exe

I've tried a setup file' but still to no avail (cd/dvd/blu ray). The folder that appears from the power disc is 'KUODA-BD-OEM......' & then
argh.....copied a lot of the files, but they won't paste :(
I'll take a breather then try your settings steaky :D

okey doke took a breather .....I eventually installed the powerdvd - the 32nd file worked!! (one of the many setup ones). Then it wouldn't let me do anything without inputting the key - it was full of 'o's, 'v's, 'u's & 's's!!! BD & DVD works yay! Can't say I was impressed with BD, but gee 'Life on Mars' was making me sea sick ha ha. I will be using 'Nero' or PSPVideo so prob get a slightly better pic with BD then. The sound is rather harsh...very digital, but I'm sure once everything's up & running I'll be able to tweak.
Thankyou very much for helping out guys... I certainly appreciated it :D
