Brand New Recoil IV 15.6" Overheating Immediately

Hey all, I would really appreciate your help.

I recently bought a Recoil IV 15.6" gaming laptop, specification below. I have downloaded Civilisation 6 and XCOM 2 and have noticed that the GPU and CPU are sky rocketing in temperatures as soon as I start playing. I am hitting ~60FPS with XCOM 2 and ~150FPS with Civ. 6 and temperatures in both my GPU and CPU are hitting 86-90 degrees in <5 minutes and then I am being throttled, but temperatures still remain high.

I have the laptop on a fan mat with 5 fans going full whack and that is still not helping. I have downloaded all the relevant and up to date drivers and all the recommended software but I am still having this issue.

I have done some research and the recommended temperatures for the GPU are 70-80 degrees. I am really concerned as to how the laptop will cope when playing more demanding games like Cyberpunk 2077 when it is overheating with relatively less demanding games like Civ and XCOM.

Is this normal for the laptop, it seems awfully hot... I have also tried the tricks in lowering the power settings to 99% but that hasn't helped at all...

How did you install windows and drivers?

temps will be high until windows is properly configured, we need to make sure windows is ok before assuming it’s hardware related.

I did a clean install of windows from a bootable USB about 6 days ago now, it was hot for about 1-2 days but then settled.

How long will it take to configure/anything else I can do?

How did you install drivers? Where did you source them?

My drivers were sourced from GeForce experience and then from the pcspecialist personalised downloads section. They're all up to date for my graphics card and processor

And the rest? Are any devices outstanding in device manager? Have you installed gaming center which is the master driver?

In my opinion there is absolutely nothing wrong with those temperatures they are within spec.
If you want to try to reduce them apply an under-vault and if you want repaste the GPU and CPU.

*edit* My opinion was a load of crap.

The rest has all been done with official websites and from PCS. I have installed gaming centre and put in a custom fan curve which hasn't helped... I am at a bit of a loss in all honesty.

I don't know... NVidia's website says that the 2070 Super portables best operating range is 70-80 degrees. I would be fine if I were hitting 85+ degrees after a protracted period of gaming but it is literally <5 mins into me starting Civ 6 and it's throttling and hitting >90 degrees.

I have given PCS a call and they have agreed that it doesn't seem right. I am returning it to be re-pasted and re-tested

That's interesting have you got a link to the nvidia temp tolerances that you are quoting?

I am not saying you are wrong i just want to see it as i cant find it.

For context i have had two PCS laptops close to your specs.

My Vortex regularly hit mid 80's on the GPU which was a 2070 when playing any games and high 80's to low 90's on the CPU which was a 9750H. That was with an under-volt.

I now have a Vyper 17 inch with a 2070 which again seems to be hitting mid 80's during gaming and a 10875H CPU which is again hitting high 80's low 90's whilst gaming. Now don't get me wrong I've only had it a day and I'm still tweaking the under-volt.

That all being said if PCS say they think there is something wrong who am i to say otherwise.

I agree it probably needs a re-paste (which i would encourage you to do yourself as it is mega easy and would be way quicker than sending it back to PCS) and it definitely needs an under-volt.

Unfortunately the latest generations of Intel chips run mega hot. The Recoil is a pretty thin chassis so I'm really not surprised you're seeing those temps.

*edit* still a load of crap

Correction i am currently playing siege with the under-vollt and GPU is sitting in the low 70's and the CPU is sitting in the 60's 70's. Looks like there was something wrong with the Vortex.

I have this same laptop mate with same issues. Was instructed to repaste it by PCS, which I did but it didn’t fix it. They said there’s nothing wrong with the laptop it just just throttles. Since then I’m kinda bummed with the laptop and thinking of selling it

Did you not RMA it? Don’t just settle with it, that’s not normal operation and something needs fixing.

Everyone Else is using it without any issues.

I’m pretty sure there’s nothing wrong with it mate. Seen a review on YouTube of the exact same chassis and it was hitting the same temperatures

We’ve got plenty of people with the same chassis operating absolutely fine. If a system - any system is thermal throttling then there’s something wrong or it’s not configured optimally.

I’ve spoken to PCS twice about it. I detailed my issue and they fail to see the problem. They told me that the GPU throttles on this chassis and that’s just how it is.

That's unacceptable imho, I certainly wouldn't accept that. GPU should NEVER thermal throttle, there's no instance ever in laptops where that's acceptable. CPU's on intel newer gens, perhaps but that can be sorted with an undervolt. GPU should never ever throttle.

When you repasted did you repaste the GPU as well then?

Don't just accept what your told, unfortunately there are some customer services guys who seem to want to get people off the phone as quick as possible and were saying anything to achieve that.

That's completely unacceptable, I would create an RMA though the web portal, and if you've got the name of the guy you dealt with, I'll feed that back to the customer services manager.

I’ll do just that. I’ll just request RMA then. For an example, what’s happening to me is in this video. What’s your opinion on it?

RMA it @SpyderTracks is right mate those temps aren't normal. I was led to believe they were when i had my Vortex but now i have a Vyper with basically the same specs and the GPU and CPU are sitting in the 70's when i game.

Thanks guys for the advice. I’ll do it Monday because I’m away for a few days. Built a desktop a few weeks ago so that will have to keep me going gaming wise for a while with its paltry gtx 960 lol
