The GT 730 is horrible: slow and ancient. It is easily outclassed by the integrated GPUs on modern chips. So I'd recommend something based around the Ryzen 5600G. (The other alternative would be one of various Intel chips, but the performance or the cost would be inferior.) You also get to use AMD display drivers, rather than Nvidia, which is great when you're on Linux.

I think you used the "office" configurator. You can get better value with the "gaming" configurator (even if you're not gaming).

Case
PCS P209 ARGB MID TOWER CASE I'd never recommend this, but this is such a low-power system it's probably OK. Will be noisy though and I'd prefer the Lian Li 215

That's like an 80% budget increase!

I'm not sure you'll benefit from the 1650 unless you will be doing some gaming on the system. The 5600G's graphics are perfectly adequate for software development (and honestly even Intel's would be too). Why do you think you need it?

The RAM makes sense for certain kinds of development work, though it depends on what you're doing. (Compiling big software, sure; web development, definitely not.) Similarly the SSD: if you need 2TB, sure, though on a budget I'd be looking at a mix of SSD and hard drives, maybe 1TB of SSD and 2TB of hard drive.

The compromise I definitely wouldn't make would be to the power supply. Yes, 450W will certainly be enough, even with the 1650, but it will add cable clutter, add noise and reduce reliability, and reduce future use of the PC (if you decided to do some video editing, for example, and got a modern graphics card, 450W would be insufficient).

If you want to spend more on a system with a discrete GPU but you will not be gaming, streaming or video editing etc, the right GPU cards are the T400/600 series. These are built purely to support multi-monitor productivity setups. They are quiet with low power consumption and a low profile. They use mDP (since it's a smaller form factor) but you can buy mDP to DP or mDP to HDMI adapters.

I'd also switch to Intel here over the 5600X since it's cheaper with the same performance. In terms of storage, have two drives to keep the storage drive separate from the drive for OS/main programs. If you need more storage add another M2 SSD yourself. 1TB is about £60.

Thanks for your reply. I upgraded the gpu as I would like to develop software using CUDA. But then realised I dont need a high end GPU to play around with CUDA. All post 2008 GPUs from NVidia come with CUDA support.

Fair enough. I still have no idea what your budget is or what software development you're actually doing, though!

Pretty settled on the budget (i.e. ~1K +/- 10%) ... but don't want to spend on anything unnecessary (like fancy power supply or case) or any components that might become outdated soon. Will keep you guys posted.
So max budget is £1100? We can't really suggest anything without knowing a firm max budget.
