Cooling on the Corsair 500r.....confused?

My first post, so hi to everyone. :)

I've ordered the Corsair 500r case and originally I had the Coolit eco c240 radiator as my cooling option. I was told yesterday that the rad won't fit the case and I've had to go with the Fat Boy option. Not happy about that.

I'm confused, as the option to pick the same case and rad are still available on the website, even though I was told that the website was wrong. Shouldn't that have been changed to stop other people making the same mistake?

Also, to the best of my knowledge, the c240 is exactly the same as the Corsair H100, and here is a video of someone fitting it in a 500r case: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=1ehrOYMziIY#t

Why then won't it fit in my case? Why is it still advertised as compatible?

I'm just a little confused about it all and wondered if anyone could put my mind at rest.

Here's my specs in case it helps.

CORSAIR CARBIDE SERIES™ 500R WHITE MID TOWER CASE
Core™i7-2700k Quad Core
ASUS® P8Z77-V PRO
16GB KINGSTON HYPERX GENESIS DUAL-DDR3 1866MHz

600GB VELOCIRAPTOR WD6000HLHX
24x DUAL LAYER DVD WRITER
CORSAIR 750W ENTHUSIAST SERIES™ TX750 V2-80 PLUS® BRONZE
COOLIT ECO II C240 DUAL RADIATOR LIQUID CPU COOLER
Change to: COOLIT ECO II FAT BOY PUSH/PULL CONFIG LIQUID CPU COOLER
IIYAMA E2773HDS 27" LED WIDESCREEN

Thanks for any replies guys.

I got the fatboy coolit and it works great, when overclocking to 4.8 it goes to around 65'C on prime95. I was also under the impression that the h100 should be similar to the Coolit Eco II C240 dual radiator but I am not sure about the dimensions. I read in the corsair forum some threads regarding the unsuitability of the h100 with the 500r (quoting: "there is almost no room between the top of my mobo and the area for the radiator"). I know Corfate has the 500r and managed to mount the h100 (http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?16447-Corsair-Carbide-500r-Build/page2) so I can only think it depends on the motherboard. You could try to contact PCS for further advice/explanation on why it is not suitable to fit it with your spec but since they are suggesting you to change the cooler I am sure there is a good reason.

Its nothing to do the case. The c240 can fit in the 500r. However the particular motherboard you have chosen has a specific configuration that doesnt allow the fitting of the c240.

By the way we dont just call customers up willy nilly to suggest changes for the sake of it. If we called to tell you it doesnt fit, then it doesnt fit.

The fat boy is a great alternative.

For the chap who doesnt want to pm me in person i will expand on my previous post.

When we get an issue where we find something isnt compatible, the builders wil come upto the call centre and get one of the advisers to call the customer in order to explain the situation, and offer an alternative. In this case and with this motherboard the c240 cooler did not fit. On this motherboard there is a heatsink at the top edge of board and this catches on the c240.

So for the guy who doesnt know what i am on about, it is obviously different to your motherboard.

The configurator will be updated in order to prevent this combination happening again.

If only we had more Basil Fawltys in this world, instead of a society where people dont speak there mind and if they do get the politically correct brigade on their backs.

Anyhow back on topic. If you check out the graph you can see that the c240 is only slightly better, but both are way better than an intel reference cooler.

And to top it off the fat boy is approx £20 cheaper :)

Ha haa, excellent guys, Basil is one of my favourites.

I guessed there was a reason, and I realised that there was more to it than someone just deciding it was a Monday and they couldn't be bothered to fit the C240.

I wasn't told why though on the phone other than it wouldn't fit, and was curious as to why, when it seemed it would fit according to the video I had seen.

I did look at some pics of the motherboard after posting and came to the conclusion that it might be the reason in my particular case, so apologies for jumping the gun. If I'd done that first I'd have answered my own question probably.

I had seen the performance differences and realised both are very similar, the only reason I'm not happy about the alternative is aesthetics, not performance. I liked having the radiator up out of the way, rather than the bulkier FatBoy stuck on the back of the case.

Ah well, not to worry, it'll all be forgotten when I install BF3 for the first time or Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, the two games I'm going to treat myself to, as my current pc is a bit too long in the tooth for most new games.

Can I just add for anyone reading this who's not sure what to get or who to get it from as far as a new pc goes, my current pc was ordered from and built by PCS 7 years ago and it's never skipped a beat in all that time. I had to change the PSU after about 3 years but it was unbranded and I wasn't surprised it went as early as it did. The graphics card was changed to a GTX260 but not because the other died, that went in the spare pc. It's been reformatted a few times as you'd expect, but it's still going strong, so thanks PCS.

Let's hope the new beast has the same qualities as it's from the same blood line, and I'll be very happy with that.

Thanks for the answers guys, and the laughs at Fawlty Towers. All threads from now on should include a link to a clip from the show, nothing beats a good laugh.

Starting to get excited now, you all know how it is. The fact that I'm 47 and should know better doesn't count for anything I'm afraid. :)

Thanks to you all and for some great clips.

Cheers.
