CPU / GPU rendering machine. After Effects / Premiere Pro in future

Hi all,

I'm trying to spec out a CPU/GPU rendering machine. It'll be used with render engines Octane, Redshift, Arnold, and Cinema 4D native render. Am waiting for the 3090 to be released.

Connecting to LAN through ethernet and will remote desktop onto it so no monitor/keyboard required at the moment.

This new build will be used in future for video editing (After Effects/Premiere Pro), but at the moment rendering is the priority.

Any pointers or gotchas would be very welcome

Looks great to me.... 3090 obviously going to be a great card for this application.

The only area to tweak would be thermal paste, just leave it as the standard as the cooler comes pre applied with high performance paste.

Other thing to say, the 3090 is the only card that allows for NVLink (SLI) to bridge two 3090's in tandem. Not saying now, but if that's something you think may be a feasible upgrade in the future, then I'd up the PSU to a 1200W HXi model. The card on it's own draws about 350W, so that leaves 500ish for the rest of the build which should be ample.

The only other area I'd mention would be the primary M2 drive, if upping it to the PCIe 4 Firecuda would be worth it for the increased R/W's, for this application, it may well be worth it. Cost is around the same I think.

Legend! Thanks so much!
Yes 100% on SLI. I meant to ask about adding a 2nd 3090 in future, so that's great spot on the PSU and the M2.

That's going to be an absolute monster! Perfect build.

Just to update you.
PCS contacted me that the Corsair H150i couldn't fit in the case because of the size of the 3090.
Two options to choose from were change case to OBSIDIAN 750D or COOLERMASTER MASTERCASE H500M.
I didn't have time to log on and put the question out so just went for the H500M.
Arrived on Saturday but just getting to install software now as in the middle of projects.
I like it!
It's fast....very fast.
Looking forward to what I create with it.
Thanks for your help with this beast!

Some slight changes to the original order posted here.
Added firewire to hook it up to external audio interface I have in future. After seeing some early reviews on the temps I decided to stick with the single GPU. It's got 1200W PSU but when I tried to reduce that there were none in stock so stuck with the original rather than delay it further.
Added additional USB for plugging in encased M.2 to use for cache drive...but there are more than enough USB connections
The cable from the CPU cooler is tight across the empty slot of RAM which might be an issue if want to increase that in future.

Very nice, how's the case regarding noise?

There's no harm with the PSU being that large, and in fact the HXi series is worth getting the extra power just to have that particular range, they are immense PSU's and with threadripper, well worth it for the increased stability.

Very nice, how's the case regarding noise?

It's noticeable when rendering which is to be expected. At the moment it's on my desk but will be moved to another room after I've done all the config on it. It would be pretty loud to have on a desk beside you.

Difficult to describe but while rendering there's the fans that ramp up with their normal sound then there is a kind of humming noise from the 3090. It's like a mid tone. It sounds similar to a plane after take off when it's trying to get up to altitude.

I saw on the desktop there's app called iCUE where I can set profiles of the fans and see the temps of pump.
The snip is just of iCUE around 30 mins into a still render which is good to see that stay low. It does a good job of remaining around that level. Will be good to see how the temps hold when doing extended rendering for animation.

Looking forward to some threadripper rendering tonight.

Everything is very responsive compared to 8700K. They're not major but are noticeable. Installing and opening apps is noticeably quicker.

Really solid kit.
