CPU vs GPU

Hi all, question from my son. He's fed up keeps getting 94% CPU reading and 75% GPU when running Fortnite. He has just got a 144hz monitor but we dont know if that's anything to do with it, had the tower about 2 years now, running a GTX 1050 TI, with a AMD Ryzen3 1300x CPU. When we run a benchmark it switches round and runs at GPU 90-93% and CPU 60-66% which seems more optimum compared to fortnite. Any help would be appreciated 👍🏻

Is this a PCSpecialist build? Can you post the full specs from the order page?

That should be about right to be honest. What's the problem with maxing out the performance of the system, why is it annoying him?

My limited understanding of Fortnite, from what I have read, indicates that the game is very poorly optimised so high load rates are common and it is pretty CPU intensive which could explain why the load rates are higher...but, I could be wrong. Either way, I second Scott...why are high load rates bothering him? If it was maxing out both, then fair enough but they've both still got headroom

Thanks SpyderTracks, yes its a PC Specialist build, Nov 2017. Specs below and then I've also pasted some benchmark scores. Not fully savvy on all the numbers etc and what is best just a basic idea of how ideal setups run. I've enquired about possible upgrades or replacements but wanted to sound you guys out first. Many Thanks

Thanks for discussing guys, Ive replied futher down with the specs and benchmark score just performed, please appreciate that I'm learning in terms of understanding the terminology of what you're saying. All I know is there's a lot of lag when it tries to run. The comment ealier mentioning a "1300x not having the power to max out a 1650" I'm not sure what the 1650 refers to, I know the 1300x is the Ryzen processor and the 1050 is the Graphics card though?

The CPU is going to be a bottleneck for most gaming. I'm not 100% sure if that's the cause though.

When you say lag on Fortnite, which server are you connecting to? Remember that's an online game so dependent on your internet connection.

Fortnite is very overloaded at the moment and a lot of people are experiencing issues.

I think he meant stuttering and slowing down when running, connection is great and low ping, its almost like it was struggling to run. Is there any reason looking at his specs why the it might be happening or if something could be causing the CPU to do that? Should the CPU be close to 100% when the GPU is not at/near full? Just trying to understand how they both "should" look when running a game like Fortnite for example so that we know what to look for and if we need to look at improving what we have? cheers

What connection? Your internet or the game?

Your internet connection is totally independent of the game server you’re connecting to.

which game server is he connecting to?
Its the EU server, he says it's a good connection with no lag. Sorry i should have been a bit more specific of course. Our internetis superfast and the EU server he connects to is spot on apparently.

I'm wondering if as games get updated to run better what with the computer guts being I suppose budget to mid range could it just be struggling to run it now as the standard basic GPU now seems to be 6 core and requiring the obvious power supply increase and CPU upgrade etc etc? Just thought with what we'd got back then would be sufficient for the likes of Fortnite or PUBG

Ok, that's ok then.

The two things that leap out to me are:

CPU - it is a very weak cpu, but I think it should just about be enough for basic fortnight at 1080p. But you'd have to have settings pretty low for it to perform at respectable framerates. https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2018-05-11-fortnite-best-settings-5795

SSHD - renowned for being pretty awful. Performance deteriorates over time, I had one on an old work laptop for about 6 months and ditched it because it was just dire and actually worse than a 7200rpm HDD. In this day and age, it's well worth getting a 2.5" SATA SSD.

What monitor are you running it on? What resolution and refresh rate or make and model if you're unsure?

Monitor was just bought xmas:
AOC C27G1 27" Curved VA LED FHD (1920x1080) Freesync 144Hz (VGA, HDMI x 2, DisplayPort). Wondered if that is anything to do with it as kept banging on about wanting 144hz

That should be ok, although the PC won’t be able to push anywhere near 144hz on low settings.
