Defiance IV CPU/GPU throttling + acceptable temperatures?

Hello,

I am considering to buy a Defiance IV (17.3") with a GTX 1060 but I am very unsure concerning throttling and the comfortability of the keyboard for high temperatures.
It might happen that the CPU but especially the GPU is used for several hours at ~100%. Therefore I have two questions:

1. Will the Defiance IV throttle down the GPU or CPU? At https://www.notebookcheck.net/PC-Specialist-Defiance-IV-i7-7700HQ-GTX-1060-Full-HD-Laptop-Review.273096.0.html they say that the CPU throttles but not the GPU and that there might be a BIOS update in the future against throttling. Does maybe one owner of a Defiance IV know the current state of the throttling issues?

2. I have never worked with a high-performance notebook so that I do not know how ~52°C on my laptop and especially for typing on the keyboard feels like. I will use the keyboard intensively even when the machine is used up to ~100%. Is it acceptable for full usage of the keyboard?

3. How is the heat/throttling management with a GTX 1070? When the GTX 1060 is so hot it looks a bit irritating for me to offer an option for the GTX 1070.

Greetings and thank you for your time

So, I have owned a 15" Defiance IV for a few years now. Recently I started becoming concerned with it overheating. The CPU temperature was idling at about 85° and went up to 95° whilst doing photo / video editing. I spent the day cleaning out dust from all the vents and now it runs so much better! I wasn't expecting such a difference so I believe it was throttling itself at 95° to prevent overheating. Now the CPU temperature idles at around 55° and maxes out at around 65/70°

So to answer your question, with sufficient cooling the CPU and GPU should never reach a temperature where throttling would occur. Just clean all the ports once a year or so.
The keyboard doesn't get hot as far as I know, or it shouldn't anyway. Most of the heat comes out as hot air from the vents on the left side (again, after the big clean this is a lot better)
I am not 100% sure about the GTX 1070, but the GPU temperature never really got hot on my laptop, especially compared to the CPU. Remember the CPU is always doing more work.

Thank you for your comment, Takingthemike!

It is interesting to hear how much influence the dust can have on the cooling efficiency of the system. The overall experience concerning overheating and thus possible throttling issues seems to be very good for your smaller Defiance IV model. I will give the Defiance IV 17.3" model with the GTX 1070 a try ;).

Have a nice day!

Dust = heat = dead computers, so cleaning dust out is highly recommended for all PCs :)

Just as an aside, Takingthemike's laptop won't be a Defiance 4 as the Defiance 4 hasn't been on sale for that long. It will be an older clevo chassis. The i7 7700HQ does seem to run hotter than its predecessors. If people have an issue with temps, it tends to be with the CPU rather than the GPU from what I've seen on these forums and in laptop reviews.

You could consider waiting for Coffee Lake and Ryzen mobile CPUs to be more widely available and see what's on offer then.
