Did I mess up with my motherboard choice?

So I bought my build a few weeks ago, and now it's finally in the building phase, but now I'm concerned a bit that I might not have gotten a good motherboard. I took a lot of advice and did some research at first, and in the end I picked up the B550 Gaming X V2. I'm not really a motherboard expert, and now I've looked into it with my amateur's hat on it seems to be a bit of a mixed bag and a bit underwhelming even within its price category. So I guess what I'd like advice on is have I messed up my choice considering the rest of my build, or will it not matter too much in the end?

I'm not really looking to change the build at this point - I would like it finished! - but wanted some opinion as to the above. I did take a lot of advice re. the rest of the build from people I know and trust, and they didn't make any comment on the motherboard so hoping it'll be not too much of a millstone for the build!

definitely wouldn't put a 5900x on b550 motherboard, there's other problems with the build as well, are you sure it's in build

I’m not the biggest fan of the motherboards that Gigabyte has put out in the past, although some of their new models seem to be vastly improved. The one you’ve chosen isn’t the best, it’ll run the CPU but if you were to dabble in overclocking or really hammer the cores, the VRM may struggle and be a throttle point.

Your system will run just fine as a daily driver, it’s just not as optimised as it perhaps could have been.

I see, that's disappointing. So theoretically then, what would be a better choice within a similar-ish price range? And given the PC is now in the Build phase as of this afternoon, would I lose a lot of time if I switch now?

I think that’ll depend on your uses, what will you be doing with the system? Also, what’s the budget and the monitor that you’ll be matching up with it?

You would likely lose time and potentially incur an additional fee for making changes during the building stage.

I was hoping to game with it primarily, nothing too fancy but generally wanted to keep up; I'd probably be playing certain RPGs from the last couple years like RDR2, and stuff like that. I'm moving up from an R9 380 so anything's an upgrade at this point but I fear I've ruined the build's medium-term future by picking such a bad board.

I spent £1845 total so far, and as for the monitor, I'm still in between monitors till I build up the funds again so I'm stuck with a 1080p one for now. Was going to move up to 1440p eventually, and probably not going to go anywhere near 4K.

Re. the fee - I see, so it's probably not worth changing it at this point.... honestly a bit sad about the build now, I thought I had better advice! But thanks for the info.

No problem. If you did want to change, or take a look at a system a bit more optimised for gaming at 1440p, this is a similarly priced option. An extra 2TB HDD would add a little more but is always a good shout as extra storage for photos, music, vids and the like…
