Do I need additional cooling if not overlocking?

Hi,

Just trying to get a final opinion on this as I have had a lot of conflicting information. I am planning to get an I-3470 in a BitFenix Prodigy Black case. No plans on overclocking the system, and I was wondering if the standard cooling is fine? The only reason I am asking is because the only additional cooling that is offered is the H40, which hasn't received a great write up.

From what I have been led to understand, the airflow on the Black case is better than the white, and should be able to handle gaming easily. The system is purely for gaming. The GPU is a GTX 770 2gb.

Thanks for your help.

PS: Upgrading to a full tower is not an option in this case.

The mini pc section only offers options between the standard intel or H40 if I remember correctly, considering that you have a mini case and it is for gaming the H40 should offer better cooling performance than the standard intel cpu cooler.

This is indeed the case. Any advice on better cooling systems that would fit an M-ITX?

Usually the triple copper heatpipe cpu cooler is the one that is suggested for a gaming rig in the forum. Out of those 2 options I'd go with the H40, it's a shame there are no more option.

Games are mostly GPU intensive, the processor should be fine with the stock cooler if not overclocking.

I'd go for the h40 over the stock intel cooler any day of the week.

I would though, change the fan on the h40 as it's only a basic 3pin fan and a tad noisy.

A friend of mine has a BitFenix build with an i5-3570k which is overclocked (no idea why), and he has an H60 in there. I've always wondered why PCS don't offer that cooler in that case.

The standard cooling should do the job, that's what it is designed for. That is not to say it wont get warm, especially in a small case with a GTX 770 parked beside it, but I can't see any damage being done. Just so long as you don't mind a bit of noise it should work fine.

I'll probably just throw in the H40 and change the fan. Seems like that is the best compromise. I just wish PCS would allow me to put in a better cooling unit!
