DVI port on new computer not accepting DVI cable...

Hi,

I just bought a new PC from PCSpecialist, and love it.

The only trouble is, I've been using one monitor up to date. I've bought a second monitor along with a DIV to VGA cable (so I can use two monitors at once), but the DVIport on my computer won't take the DVI end of the cable. It's the right shape, and seems to have all the right bits to fit into the port, but to no avail :(

I'm wondering, can anyone tell me have I bought the right cable?

My graphic card is a 6GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 2060, and the cable I've bought is a DVI-I to VGA cable.

I'm hoping it's that I've bought the wrong cable, and that it's not a problem with the DVI port on my computer.

If the problem doesn't lay with the cable, I really need to be getting on with my work, and can't be waiting weeks, maybe months to send the computer back to be repaired... does anyone know of another way I can connect two monitors to my computer? Is there an adapter/converter I can buy to connect my PC to a second monitor?

I know my PC has two HDMI ports, but that doesn't let me use a spit screen. My second monitor has a VGA port, that's why I bought a DVI to VGA cable.

Advice appreciated!

Thanks,
Zoe

Hi,

I bought a new computer from PCS this month, and love it.

But up to date I've been using it with just one monitor. I bought a second monitor this week alongside a DVI to VGA cable, so that I can use the two monitors at once. The trouble is, the cable won't fit into the slot. It's the right end, and has all the right bits to fit into the holes, but it just won't slot in. I'm stressed out by this because I need to be getting on with my work.

My other monitor is connected with a HDMI cable (into the hdmi port on my PC).

On top of everything else that's happening at the moment, I really don't want to have to send the computer back and wait weeks, maybe even months for it to be returned.

I'm wondering, since there is a second HDMI port on my PC, is there any kind of adapter that I can get that will allow me to use the VGA port on my monitor so I can use two different screens at once? Or, am I going to have to send the computer back?

Advice appreciated.

Thanks,

Zoe.
DVI to VGA likely won't work anyway unless it's an active adapter cable as it's got to convert a digital signal (DVI) to Analogue (VGA).

Does the monitor only have VGA?

No, it has HDMI and VGA, but I need to be able to have a split screen across two monitors. I've tried connecting them both with just HDMI cables, but that only works with one monitor :(

Not sure I follow?

I need to be able to have two different monitors connected to my desktop. In Windows, there's a setting that lets you split the two screens.

I read online that you can't do this by connecting both monitors with HDMI. So, I I thought I'd need a DVI to VGA cable.

How is it that gamers who use two split screens connect their PCs to their monitors?

You can do it fine with 2 HDMI's, so long as they're both outputs on the GPU.

It's only if you're trying to use a splitter off one port that it will replicate the display to both monitors.

The trouble is, there's only 1 HDMI port on the GPU.

The other one's on the bottom of the the PC (at the back, where the power cable goes). I think this is the motherboard?

I can see three ports there that say "DP" (I think). Are these display ports? If so, is there any way I can connect one of these to my monitor?

Yes, you need to use the GPU outputs and if you havn't got the output available on the monitor, then you'd have to use an adapter cable.

DP is the standard used these days, much superior to HDMI.

You can get DP to HDMI cables very easily off Amazon or PCS.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out (I got confused in that previous message, so have edited it).

There's only one HDMI port on the Nvidia part (GPU, I understand now, thanks).

The other HDMI port, and the 3 DP ports are all at the bottom part of the PC (is that the motherboard?)

So, are you saying that I can't connect two monitors to my computer then?

Can you take a photo of the back of the PC GPU outputs and then one of the DVI cable connector you've been trying to use?

I wish I could, my camera's not working at the moment.

I have just turned my computer off so I could have another look at the back of it...

Okay, so I may be confused over which is the GPU and the motherboard...

The one monitor that is plugged in, by a HDMI cable, is plugged into a port at the bottom of the computer (bottom back). And next to this HDMI port are 3 ports labelled "DP"

Where the VGA port, and other HDMI port are, are at the top back of the machine, alongside ports to plug the speakers in, mouse and keyboard. And this part of the machine is labelled Aorus.

So, should I be using one of the three ports labelled "DP" at the bottom of the machine to connect my second monitor?

This is the motherboard. These won’t work as you’re using a GPU.

These are the GPU. You can use any of these ports. You’ll need a DP to HDMI cable linked above.
