E-mail issues when upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1

My query is regarding e-mail issues. I currently use Windows Live Mail in Windows 7 but wish to utilise the Mail app on 8.1. when I purchase my new desktop (from PC Specialist of course!). I see that I can backup my contacts list on WLM to a CSV file. Will I be able to import the contacts into Mail from this csv file?

My ISP is BT and I use Yahoo webmail with my messages being downloaded to WLM. I presume that it will not be possible to import all my WLM messages to Mail.

Many thanks

I don't use Windows 8.1 Mail app, though I do use Windows 8.1. I just fired up the Mail app to see what was possible, it can connect to your existing Yahoo account (and accounts from several other providers too) so I'm guessing that you will have access to your existing email from the Mail app. Possibly... :)

Word of warning, it doesnt support pop3, for contacts, it should sync your contacts and emails direct from yahoo, Google etc.

Now we've established that the Mail app uses IMAP you need to realise that your email will be treated a little differently in the Mail app to your email in WLM (assuming your using POP3 with WLM, which you probably are).

With POP3 mail is downloaded to your PC for you to read, but it also remains on the Yahoo server (based on the retention settings you have in WLM). So if you delete an email in WLM it's still on the Yahoo server (probably). When you send an email from WLM a copy is stored in the sent folder on WLM but it's not stored in the sent folder in Yahoo mail. Once you have received your eamils WLM and Yahoo operate independently.

With IMAP the emails are not stored on your PC, instead the Mail app synchronises itself with Yahoo mail. So if you delete an email in the Mail app it will also be deleted (immediately) in Yahoo mail. When you send an email using the Mail app a copy is stored in the sent folder in Mail and in the sent folder on Yahoo (because it's the same sent folder). So anything you do in the Mail app will also be done in Yahoo, and vice-versa.

I don't believe that IMAP synchronises contact lists, I use Thunderbird with four email accounts all sharing the same contact list. One of those accounts uses IMAP and the webmail service I'm using does not have my entire Thunderbird contact list stored online. So I think contact lists are separate.
