Entry level VR for Sim Racing

Hi there,

I've got a PC bought around Nov/Dec '21 running an i7-12700k and a Gigabyte 3060 Ti, and am currently tempted to invest in a Quest 2 partly just to use it solo for VR but also ideally to plug in via the Link cable and use for VR in sim racing.

I've seen that the upcoming F1 22 does support the Quest 2 at the very least, so I guess my real question is whether or not I can expect any issues with my current setup, any reason why this idea might not work, or perhaps what my expectations should be?

I'm confident enough that the rest of my system aside from the graphics card won't be a bottleneck but having seen the limitations of the card when I bought it from PC Specialist being not for 4K gaming (currently fine as I'm on a 1440p monitor anyway) but is VR ready, I'm just not knowledgeable enough currently on anything VR outside the basics, never mind knowing how the graphics performance/spec might translate to the pretty high res screens in the headset, especially when I do at least know that frame rate is critical for it!

Any thoughts really appreciated! In the interest of transparency, I'll post my build as I bought it below:

That'll run VR without any issues. I've VR raced on a much weaker system , with a GTX 1660TI, before my recent update.

It should be absolutely fine, certainly from an entry level standpoint. I can't agree with the above from @Les Whyte though, not in generic terms. I'm sure there is truth to their perceived experience but unfortunately, with VR, the experience is varied depending on your tolerance to framerate.

I'm a fortunate soul where I don't suffer from any ill effects of dropped frames or reduced framerate. I'll happily SimRace at 60-144 FPS without any noticeable side effects (save from the odd glitch). Many of my friends really struggle after a short period of time even on my rig (was an OC 2080 with OC 9900K). One of my friends can't handle it for any more than a few minutes.

They fare better with my Vive over my Index though, which is due to the increased FPS/reduced resolution.

The Oculus 2 actually has a really good resolution so it does need a bit of juice to keep the FPS high. F1 2022 looks to be a decent performer so I think, certainly for entry with the settings dialled in, the 3060Ti should do quite well :)

So, I said""That'll run VR without any issues". you said "It should be absolutely fine" & "the 3060 should do quite well". What are you disagreeing with?

I wasn't disagreeing with that part of the statement, it was justifying the assertion with the comparison to the 1660Ti that I wouldn't want people thinking would lead to a positive experience.

Making that comparison as an assertion, for me, reduced the credibility of your opinion on the 3060Ti; so I just wanted to manage the expectations a little better.

The 1660Ti will run VR but it doesn't perform well at all and it certainly wouldn't perform well with a Quest2 in F1 2022.

Ok, well despite my answer to the OP was correct, and my lack of credibility has been taken on board. (y)
