Whats the problem?

A four core i7 is plenty for gaming and with the price difference you could have got a better GPU.
You would notice the gaming difference between a 960 and 970 more than you would between an i5 and a six core i7.
You've bascially spent money on an over-specified CPU and then gone for cheaper options in some other areas. Unbalanced is the word.
Good news is that you do have a good CPU and a good motherboard and you can go forward from there.

Any greater demands on the CPU from games in the next couple of years will likely be offest, and perhaps outrun, by the greater integration of DX12 into games.
