First Custom PC advise

Hi guys,

I am customising my first PC (hope to build my first PC in 1 or 2 years as well but I still don't have the confidence for that just yet) and wanted to ask those who have more knowledge in the field about certain recommendations. Firstly, wanted to know what cooling system you guys would recommend for the specs I've attached below. I've gone for a regular AC with extra fans as I looked at all the pros and cons for AC and liquid cooling. Is this the correct choice for the specs I've chosen as I don't want to fry my build quickly. Secondly wanted to know if there is any real performance difference between a 8gb RTX 2080 super and a 11gb RTX 2080ti. I mean if it's going to be a negligible upgrade might stay away from it. Thanks

It's not well balanced and an AMD build would be significantly better.

What monitor are you pairing it with, what resolution and refresh or make and model if you're unsure?

What's your max budget?

What are you using the PC for?

I would prefer Intel core processor as this will not exclusively be for gaming. I will most likely be using a MSI/ASUS/ROG monitor with 144hz or above with 1ms response and 1440p (might go 4K but depends). Budget between 2,250 - 2,750. And I'll be using it for gaming (i.e cyberpunk, last of us, rainbow, cod, bf type games), Architecture (Revit, 3DS max, Vray, CAD, Twinmotion, Unreal Engine type softwares).
If you could advise on a spec that uses i9 and not AMD it would be prefer (unless if you can make an arguement for the AMD of course)

Note: Also a nice case recommendation would be appreciated as well, not really liking the choices at PCS as I prefer the matte white cases with tempered glass on the side. Whereas the PCS cases are either ugly black ones or rgb obsessed most often. Reason for asking is i'm not sure which case could accommodate specs as don't want to buy something too big or too small

AMD are vastly superior to Intel now, intel are the poor choice for performance since 3rd gen Ryzen came around. The only chip that still makes sense is the 9900k for 1080p 240hz, but that’s the ONLY place intel are better. Plus they’re riddled with security issues and more are being found almost monthly, they’re just terrible processors compared to AMD.

what else is the pc being used for, what software?

It’s important to know which screen you’re getting or your budget for the screen as the PC is built to pair with the screen. A half decent 1440p screen is about £350 which would be a different build to a 4k screen at around £700

With the expection of gaming I will be using most AutoDesk softwares (architecture, engineering type programmes), Twinmotion, Unreal Engine. Monitor is reliant on the PC build so not a massive budget issue on that area but obviously wouldn't want to spend anymore than 750 on a monitor. Want to run all softwares I need and also play at 1440p or 4k with high fps ultimately.

Note: just went to customise something quickly, this falls in my budget but again due to the lack of my knowledge I don't know if I am over doing it certain areas. Thoughts?

Slightly rebalanced, would suit a 1440p ultrawide:

Case
CORSAIR OBSIDIAN SERIES™ 500D SE CASE Better case to support the cooler
Processor (CPU)
AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12 Core CPU (3.8GHz-4.6GHz/70MB CACHE/AM4) Much more suitable for gaming, still oodles of power for the other uses, far more powerful than the 9900k you had previously.
Motherboard
ASUS® ROG STRIX X570-F GAMING (USB 3.2 Gen 2, PCIe 4.0) - RGB Ready! Absolutely fine for this processor.
Memory (RAM)
32GB Corsair VENGEANCE RGB PRO DDR4 3200MHz (2 x 16GB) Faster RAM with RGB
Graphics Card
8GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 2080 SUPER - HDMI, 3x DP GeForce - RTX VR Ready!
1st Storage Drive
NOT REQUIRED
2nd Storage Drive
2TB SEAGATE IRONWOLF PRO 3.5", 7200 RPM 128MB CACHE Personally I'd get bigger than this, 2Tb isn't much these days
1st M.2 SSD Drive
1TB SEAGATE FIRECUDA 520 GEN 4 PCIe NVMe (up to 5000MB/R, 4400MB/W) Much faster PCIe 4 M2 drive
DVD/BLU-RAY Drive

Power Supply
CORSAIR 750W RMx SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET Much higher quality PSU will help with airflow in the case and generally more stable

Processor Cooling
Corsair H115i RGB PLATINUM Hydro Series High Performance CPU Cooler Minimum required on this processor.
Thermal Paste

Thanks for the help. I final thing, do you think a case like this would be suitable for such a build? I really like rbg but I plan on building my own PC in the next couple of years so I just want this to do the job but also have a nice simple design kinda inline with an apple product with a simple white heavy/black minor design.

That's more of a budet case and wouldn't be suitable for such a high end build.

Hi guys,

I've configuered a custom PC with the help of a moderator and wanted advice on a case that would be suitable to the specs. To clarify I don't really like the PCS cases and wanted something that has a simple white colouring (maybe some black as well) and a tempered glass. I've attached an example case of what kind I'm looking for but due to my lack of knowledge within this field I am not sure if this is suitable to the PC build I have selected.

It's got space for the radiator which is the most important thing, it's not the best cooling case, but is again quite low budget, so you'd sacrifice performance for looks, but it wouldn't be anything drastic.

I would buy, effectively, any Corsair case over £100 and send it in. Just pick one that you like, you can't really go wrong with their premium offerings. Anything over, or around, an iCue will be suitable.

3900X with a 2080 Super would be my recommendation as well, pretty much exactly the same as @SpyderTracks.

If you are serious about 4k you may want to consider the 2080Ti but that may take you over budget. It would completely depend on how important 4k is to you and when you want to make that leap (save now to upgrade later may be more relevant).

Consider an ultrawide monitor as well. Human eyes are made for peripheral vision. My brain absolutely LOVES ultrawide systems. 2080 Super will handle one of those very well. 2080Ti is just a cherry on top.

The top MSI is the highest specs as it’s uwqhd so it’s effectively 2 x width 1440p monitors.

You wouldn’t buy 2 of these as you’d only be gaming on one, for surround you’d have 3 monitors otherwise the FOV is in the center at the bezels. Also there isn’t a GPU setup on the planet that could power even 2 ultrawides.

The second is just standard Qhd which is t suitable for this build.

the third and fourth are lower end wqhd, the msi has hdr whereas the ASUS will be a higher quality panel.

but the first option is by far the best.

Hi again guys, done some more research and came up with this for the build. The corsair 678C case I wanted was apparently quite poor in terms of noise and cooling performance so was advised to use the one that happens to be in the PCS range (kinda sucks that they don't have any white case option). I've also lowered the power supply to a 650W (originally 750W) which is still sufficient but is that a good choice or not?

The 678C would be fine, it's just not an ideal choice. It's more aimed at looking the part than housing performance bits for airflow.

It's also ridiculously expensive, it's a strange case to land on.

If you want white, understated and good for airflow I would look at the Define R6 white edition. That ticks every base for any system. PCS may even source it for you. It has a black/grey brushed effect front though... to break up the white.
