Hi all!
I finally decided to take the plunge and buy my first desktop.
I've drawn up this spec. Tried not to go too crazy.
Any advice on what would be good to change/add?

Thanks!

What monitor will you be gaming on? Is this to be included on the £3000? For this kind of budget you can go for a 4k monitor or a 2k with high refresh rate. The processor you chose is not really for gaming. The 9700k would be better suited. Overall is not a well balanced build. If you need this urgently, the below would be a much better option capable of gaming at 4k(comments below). Otherwise, AMD are expected to release newer processors at the end of this month which could open up more options.

I don't currently have a 4k monitor, but I'm looking to get one. It'd be great if I could get one with the PC under £3000, but not essential.

Its not an urgent replacement, but looking to build a new one in the next couple of months.

This is honestly some really solid advice, thank you so much!

You are most welcome. For example the AMD build below will perform similar to the intel one suggested above and it is about £350 cheaper. This would leave you around £800 for a decent 4k screen or a QHD with high refresh rate but if you are in no rush, wait for the release of the new gen processors.

Agreed with much of the advice above.

A very good 4k monitor + powerful gaming system is easily doable for £3000.

The i7 9800x on the X299 mobos is definitely not the right CPU/mobo combo. AMD on the 400 series mobos or Intel on their Z390s is more appropriate for your uses. Offering better performance and/or better value.

The spec above by Flo is very solid, but also as suggested I'd recommend waiting a week to see what AMD release in terms of Zen 2.

NB: The Thermaltake case is massive. Even by the standards of the already very large 750D.
THERMALTAKE CORE X71 TEMPERED GLASS EDITION GAMING CASE - 677 x 250 x 511mm (Approx H x W x D)
CORSAIR OBSIDIAN SERIES™ 750D FULL TOWER CASE - 560mm x 235mm x 546mm (Approx H x W x D)

There are lots of options to consider in the price range. The Corsair 460X is much cheaper and a very good case. And smaller (440mm x 220mm x 464mm) or the 500D SE which is not too huge (500mm x 233mm x 507mm) and has a lot of features including USB 3.1 Gen 2 type C port at the front.

Perhaps revisit in a week or so :)
