First Gaming PC - £2000 budget

Hey everyone. Decided after decades of console gaming, that I finally want to build my own PC. I’m a complete beginner, and am admittedly a little nervous about it all. After seeing all the wonderful advice many of you guys offer to others, I’m hoping you can help set me on my journey.

To begin with, my budget would preferable be at £2000. If necessary, I could go a little over. I’d like any recommended builds to please include a 1440p monitor, keyboard and mouse if possible. I’m planning to use the finance option when I purchase. I notice in other posts, many recommend buying monitors that aren’t available on PCS. If this is a far better option, I would be open to it.

I’ll be mainly using this PC for gaming. In 1440p if possible. I will be doing light office work on it, as well as using the internet, streaming videos etc. The game I will be mainly playing will be Dayz (So tired of how badly it runs on console). I’ll be aiming to play modded servers. Others games I’ll playing will be Minecraft, City Skylines (Both with mods). My son will play Fortnite. I’d like to be able to play AAA titles if possible. I aim to maybe do some video editing from the games I play, so a system that could handle that would be great.

I have no idea if my budget is enough for all these things. I’ve been researching for a couple of months and feel it’s time to go for it. I hope to make an order in the next few weeks. I’m very nervous about the building process. Worried of doing it wrong and braking something. Would you guys recommend home installation assistance for someone who’s nervous, or should i not worry too much and do it myself?

Heya! Thanks for all the info! Should all be possible for your budget! Just before we continue, as you're saying "I finally want to build my own PC" Are you looking to personally build this PC yourself, or are you wanting to configure the system then have it built and shipped to you by PCS?

Sorry, yes I want to configure the system and have PCS build and ship it.

I've done a spec although it is only a starting point as I'm not at all familiar with Intel CPUs currently. Mouse and keyboard is not included as those are a personal preference thing and what I need out of them (functional and reliable, nothing more) will be different than what someone else needs (maybe RGB lighting, mechanical as used for gaming etc). Monitor: have included one but there will be a better choice from 3rd party.....though I also realise you may need to buy everything from PCS from a finance perspective.

Anyway, this is my thinking:

Clearly I have gone over-budget (and it doesn't even count the M+K). Areas could be trimmed to save a bit of money (slower primary drive etc)
Thanks for taking the time to do this. Will have a look over the specs when I get a bit of time later and come back with any questions I may have. Thanks again.

My advice would be buy the monitor elsewhere. The ones PCS do arent the best, and certainly not the best price. You can find some real bargains on places like amazon where there are also frequently discounts. Biggest bonus is the range thats available there, MSI one is a decent enough monitor, but i think even on amazon its cheaper (not massively).

I understand you are doing it on finance, but personally i'd only get the system itself through PCS. You can still get a very solid system for 1440p for £1500-£1700

Alternatively, maybe this.

You wouldnt even notice the difference in the OS drive speed (I know the numbers look huge, but you are talking about a tiny fraction of a second in real terms) and a AMD GPU which is very capable (slight difference in raytracing, but main benefit with nvidia is where stuff like streaming/creating content going on etc rather than just gaming) Better cooler and bigger PSU.
Should also be noted, the 3200MHz ram is CL 16, 3600MHz ram is cl18 so you pratically cant tell the difference. (You can overclock the ram if you like to get 3600MHz cl16...but theres absolutely no guarantee it will work its all pot luck)

This would mean youve got a machine that can grow easily over 10 years, rather than playing with some of the more core components

The Intel 670p is basically the same speed as the Samsung 970 Evo but it's £20 cheaper mate

970 Evo was brilliant 4 years ago but it's been surpassed and it's still very expensive

Also the 970 Evo is 3rd Gen whereas the 980 Pro is Gen 4 so it will be able to utilise smart access memory in future. Although I think you need a 1TB drive for that for now

I was looking at the write speed, at 500GB its double the intel write speed? (is smart access Microsoft Directstorage? If so yes its 1TB min)
I was surprised that the 970 is only £20 less than the 980 pro to be fair... would you go with just using the intel ones, or even just PCS ones to be honest.... can free up room in the budget elsewhere to build a more solid frame? (or just up the 970 to 980 and build is on the £2K budgewt target anyway)

What do you reckon? Better core, and then stuff like storage is very easy to upgrade and can be done over a few years if they really want to, plenty of room for GPU upgrades on a 1000W PSU? Still a bit over as I up'd the CPU

If you're really trying to stay on budget, then this is the build I'd recommend. There should be just about enough to pick up a keyboard and mouse set at the end of this. Won't be the fanciest stuff but will do the job for now (y)

The other thing worth mentioning is if you've got any PC you'll stop using after this one arrives you could always take the Windows licence from that one then transfer it over to save about £85 or so.

Memory (RAM)
16GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 3200MHz (2 x 8GB) Not a massive real world difference between 3600mhz and 3200mhz and 32 saves some cash, so
Graphics Card
8GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 3060 Ti - HDMI, DP, LHR I don't personally think the 6600XT is quite there for 1440p
1st M.2 SSD Drive
512GB INTEL® 670p M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 3000MB/sR, 1600MB/sW) If you're looking for the value 500GB/ 1TB SSD setup then this is the route to go

Power Cable

PCS FrostFlow 200 Series High Performance CPU Cooler Not the favoured cooler on the forum but will still do a fine job of cooling a 12600K and £60 cheaper than its AIO counterpart (believe @Steveyg has one on a 12700K)

Thanks JUNI0R, like the look of this here. Just a few questions;

I assume you favour the VG27AQ1A over the Optix G27CQ4? I like the fact I can get finance from Curry’s; plus there’s one literally 3 minutes away from where I work.

I’ve noticed if I go with the VG27AQ1A, I’ll still have around £70 before I go over budget. Would you recommend getting a HDD? I ask because I’ll probably upload work files, photos and videos to this PC in the future. Plus I’d quite like to edit game clips and videos to upload to YouTube at some point. I’m happy to have more storage to play around with. Would I need to add this to achieve these things?

Honestly couldn't comment on the MSI monitor, I've just mentioned the VG27AQ1A as it's a monitor we like a lot here and comes in at a few £ cheaper.

The extra £70 was sort of a buffer to add a half decent keyboard and mouse which aren't in my spec at the moment. If you wanted to spend the extra on PC parts then I'd either go for a HDD as you say, will come in handy for storing some files, or another 16GB of RAM (go for the 32GB 2x16GB @ 3200mhz option). While you'll probably be fine with 16GB, you've mentioned a number of uses that'd certainly optimise 32GB- video editing, modded Cities Skylines, AAA titles and streaming yourself if that's something you decide to get into too. Ideally I'd get both, but if not I'll leave the decision up to you (y)

I’ve decided to go with your recommendation on the monitor and the extra parts. I’m going a little over budget once I purchase said monitor and peripherals, but I allowed for that.

I assume the power supply is still good with the extra ram and HHD?

I wouldn't have the Frostflow personally. Spec wise it'll do the job fine, but I just wouldn't stand by it's reliability and build quality. To put it in and forget about it I would have the H100i RGB and pay the extra :)
Think I can just about manage that with my budget. Will my power supply still be good?

850w is fine for what you are ordering. Has a nice headroom. You may want to consider the 1000w RMx to safeguard any future upgrades. Staying at the same tier of GPU the 850w should be fine for years, but if you want to level up the gaming potential it may warrant a more powerful card, and thus a more powerful PSU. You just need to consider whether or not you expect to upgrade your gaming experience over the life of the system.

I'll be opting for a 1000w PSU as a minimum when I spec my build later in the year. I'm actually airing towards the 1200w offering... but the price is steep at that point. I see the 1000w as an absolute bargain personally.

I can see myself wanting to possibly upgrade in the future, so I’ll take your advice on that also.

Thanks for all the wonderful advice peeps. Really appreciate it.

After taking everything you’ve all said, this is my final build. Hopefully will be making the purchase in the next couple of weeks. So excited 😀
