First Gaming PC

Hi All,

I am looking into purchasing my first gaming PC. This will also be used for a general home PC and some light work for my occupation (just some light CAD work and excel spreadsheets).I am currently a console gamer so I know very little about PC gaming, ie specs etc. The type of games I would play are Call of Duty Modern Warfare, PUBG, FIFA, Planet Zoo, FM2020 (I would like to play this so it's quick with a few playable leagues open).
I don't want to go too wild in how much I'm spending but at the same time I want to be able to game with the highest settings I can in my price range and if possible in 1440p.
The build I have chosen is a little over £1200 and ideally I'd like to keep it around this budget with it pushing up to a max of around £1500 if it were to make a noticeable difference in gameplay etc.
I haven't got a monitor yet, this would be purchased afterwards to suit the system I have (like I said, I'd like to play in 1440p if possible).

Any help or guidance would be much appreciated.

Yeah £300-350 from what I've been looking at on various websites. 1440p 144Hz is what I'd be looking at though.

This is a bit better balanced with notes on components changed:

Case
FRACTAL FOCUS G BLACK GAMING CASE (Window) Really decent case you've chosen, performs well above it's price range
Processor (CPU)
AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Six Core CPU (3.6GHz-4.2GHz/36MB CACHE/AM4) No benefit to the 3600x, uses more juice but doesn't provide any meaningful performance increase that make it worthwhile costwise
Motherboard
ASUS® TUF X570-PLUS GAMING (USB 3.2 Gen 2, PCIe 4.0, CrossFireX) - RGB Ready!
Memory (RAM)
16GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 3200MHz (2 x 8GB) Much faster RAM, optimal speed for Ryzen
Graphics Card
8GB AMD RADEON™ RX 5700 XT - HDMI, DP - DX® 12 Much more powerful GPU which should max out 1440p 144Hz for most games
1st Storage Drive
2TB SEAGATE BARRACUDA SATA-III 3.5" HDD, 6GB/s, 7200RPM, 256MB CACHE
1st M.2 SSD Drive
500GB SEAGATE FIRECUDA 520 GEN 4 PCIe NVMe (up to 5000MB/R, 2500MB/W) Fastest M2 drive available, might as well make use of the X570 boards capabilities
DVD/BLU-RAY Drive
16x BLU-RAY WRITER DRIVE, 16x DVD ±R/±RW & SOFTWARE
Power Supply
CORSAIR 650W TXm SERIES™ SEMI-MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET
Power Cable
1 x 1 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead)
Processor Cooling
STANDARD AMD CPU COOLER

For some further information:

3600 vs 3600x:

5700XT Benchmarks at 1440p:

Good guide on monitors, you would want 1440p 144Hz with Freesync or Gsync compatible (freesync and gsync are where the monitor synchronises the refresh rate with what the GPU is outputting, leads to much much smoother gameplay and almost zero screen tearing, worth it's weight in gold especially as the GPU ages and FPS drops):

Cheers mate. Thanks for your help. Much appreciated.

Would I gain anything from upgrading the CPU to the Ryzen 7 3700X? Would it future proof it a bit more at all?

May add like 1 to 5 FPS, would t say it’s particularly worth it.

As above, it's not worth it for gaming. The only time to consider it is when your uses need the extra threads (gaming doesn't)

You're futureproofing with the motherboard. This motherboard will likely take the next generation with simply a BIOS update. This means that if you get a year or 2 down the line and fancy a performance hike, you can take the savings between the 3600/3700X from now and put it towards the next generation that will make the 3700X look silly.

Always pocket any savings right now for future potential.

If you wanted to spend more money right now the 2070 Super GPU would be my only other consideration :)
