Frame rate drops when gaming

Just to clarify as it has been said before I believe, the action of taking it to a third party does not automatically void the warranty, but PCS ‘reserve’ the right to do so.

It is always best to get PCS permission or discuss it direct with them first.

If it is evident that the third party has caused damage to the chassis or the interiors by dropping it then such things would NOT be covered by the warranty.

If you are saying the fans are faulty then they will test and either replace under warranty, replace at a fee (depending on cause for fan not working now) OR return the laptop if they deem them to be working within normal parameters.

Stiff fans might be a result of the drop dislodging then slightly.

The only way to really find out now is to do an RMA (you are likely to have to pay for the return as the main repair is damage caused by the technician) and ask for a quote on chassis and ask them to look at fans under warranty. The RMA fee usually includes collection, assessment and return to you regardless if any work completed or not. You could also ask how much a repaste and clean is as they have it.

Thank you for the helpful reply.

I have just tried playing a game and the issue the thread pertains to still occurs. I've monitored the thermals and CPU/GPU temps seem to spike up over 90 degrees quite regularly when under load.

they will until its been repasted, thats not something that will magically disappear, its like having no oil in a car.

Hi all,

I'm experiencing quite a weird situation where I get seemingly random frame rate drops on games such as Doom Eternal and Apex Legends. I have done all the usual steps like updated to latest GPU drivers, turned off background programs/Windows Gamebar. My laptop is plugged in and set to turbo mode etc.

I play these games on Low settings and I'll be at 143fps consistently on Apex Legends for example and then all of a sudden my frames will drop to about 20fps for about 5 seconds, and then it will return to 143 fps. This happens every 5 - 10 minutes. It has happened right at the beginning of a gaming session when my laptop is not hot. It also happens when I'm not actually in a match but browsing the in-game menus.

I don't understand how I would go about diagnosing this problem.

Are you only able to achieve those framerates on those settings? I play Apex on the highest settings (i7 8700K, RTX 2080, 32GB RAM, Samsung EVO SSD) and can consistently maintain 141-144FPS.

From my own experience, what's likely happening is your laptop is throttling itself to prevent overheating components. You mentioned 70-90c idle, and I can honestly say that's likely either a thermal paste issue or the heatsink isn't making contact with the CPU. I had a similar issue earlier this year, which the users on this forum helped me diagnose + fix.

If you want to check for throttling in real-time, download Intel XTU (you don't necessarily have to use it outside of these tests) and run your usual applications. It'll show indicators such as thermal, current, and power limit throttling which are also useful for diagnosing potential problems.

Also, if possible, I'd seek some sort of compensation for the 3rd party damage to your laptop. It's unacceptably poor customer service to damage your property like that

Are you sure about this? There may be a thread on the forum suggesting this but from the T&Cs it reads to me that they only reserve the right when you have replaced integral items. When a 3rd party works on the laptop it categorically will void the warranty.

The below reads as 2 separate statements to me, even though they are held under the same sub-section. With one they clearly reserve the right, with the other it's one strike.

7.9We reserve the right to suspend the warranty or refuse service if your Case, Motherboard, CPU or BIOS have been replaced without authorisation.
Any tampering, repair or modification by unauthorised personnel voids the warranty.

If I'm honest I'd think PCS will treat every case on its merits. In any case its always worth asking, they can only say no.

Oh definitely, I have no doubt that there is always come and go on a personal basis. I was more suggesting caution at statements that seemed contrary to the actual T&Cs. I didn't want anyone going away and quoting the above as fact when it doesn't seem to be IMO.

Oh I agree. The Ts&Cs are clear, don't take a PCS build to a third party for anything!

Hi, I have re-pasted the GPU and CPU. The paste inside looked fine to me tbh, but i've cleaned it and re-applied. Whilst my idle temps seems to have decreased quite a bit my problem still remains.

@DarkPaladin I can run Apex on ultra/high settings at >100 fps consistently (except for when my frame rate dips as per the thread title) but I choose not to.
